About the Department


Review preliminary and final plat submittals and perform engineering hydraulic analysis for the determination of the 100-year floodplain elevations and establish floodplain limits within proposed subdivisions and recommend approval, denial, or modification of projects under Sections 116 and 117 of the Land Division Act, 1967 PA 288, as amended (Act 288); and process applications for permits for proposed subdivision projects within the 100-year floodplain submitted under Part 31 of the NREPA.
This position has engineering responsibilities to assure that the laws and regulations pertaining to water pollution control in the State of Michigan and the programs of the Water Resources Division (WRD) are effectively and uniformly applied to municipal wastewater discharges in an assigned area of the state in order to protect public health and prevent unlawful pollution of waters of the state.

This position performs district compliance and enforcement activities in the WRD’s Kalamazoo District Office for the Groundwater Discharge Permits Program in an assigned area of the state to protect public health and prevent pollution of waters of the state.

This position has engineering responsibilities for the Surface Water Quality Program with regard to Part 31, Water Resources Protection; and Part 41, Sewerage Systems, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended (NREPA), for the Jackson District Office.  This position also provides engineering assistance to the other WRD programs in the Jackson District.

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering.

Experience
Environmental Engineer 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Environmental Engineer 10
One year of professional environmental engineering experience in the protection and improvement of land and water resources, occupational health, or air quality equivalent to an Environmental Engineer 9.

Environmental Engineer P11
Two years of professional environmental engineering experience in the protection and improvement of land and water resources, occupational health, or air quality equivalent to an Environmental Engineer, including one year equivalent to Environmental Engineer 10.

The work location of this position will be in either Kalamazoo or Jackson and will be determined based on the selected candidate.  However, the selected candidate may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule (combination of remote and in-person). Employees approved for schedules that include remote work must complete that work within Michigan. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed.  When working remote, employees must use a designated workspace that is safe and professionally appropriate, allows for privacy, minimizes distractions, and includes secure internet access. Details regarding work location and schedule options for this position may be discussed during the interview process.
