Job Description
The Home Skills Specialist is a member of the DBH Housing Department tasked with supporting adults with serious and persistent mental illness living in DBH's housing facilities. The Home Skills Specialist provides personal services, skill development, and targeted case management services to the clients living in DBH housing and completes documentation for these services as well as any other clinical information collected while working with them.
The Home Skills Specialist is required to live in a personal apartment on-site at the DBH housing facility they manage. Rent, utilities, and internet access will be provided by DBH, and may be reported as taxable earnings.
Essential Job Functions
The Home Skills Specialist will be required to complete the following essential job functions daily:
- Coordinate with MCOT if client needs transportation to the hospital, CRU, or other emergency.
- Complete room checks for order and cleanliness at least three (3) times per week. Frequency of room checks may be adjusted to be more or less frequent based on the ability of the clients to keep rooms and common areas clean. If rooms are not in keeping with standards assist client with cleaning and/or work with housing manager to provide housing sanctions.
- Assist with teaching individual skills, as needed. This may include daily chores in the home and individual living quarters. Document these services in the electronic health record.
- Inspect common areas each day to ensure they are clean and tidy. Make assignments (i.e., chore chart), as necessary.
- Assure client medications are stored in lock boxes. These must be checked daily.
- Coordinate with DBH maintenance team for all property work orders.
- Provide weekly phone or text updates to supervisor of resident needs and behaviors.
- Coordinate needs with client case managers/recover support specialists.
- Provide social opportunities for the residents (movie nights, games, etc.) 1 - 4 times monthly.
- Other duties as required and assigned.
Compensation
The successful candidate will be compensated at the rate of $17.75 per hour for office hours and other services provided to the residents and other clients at DBH. Rent, utilities and internet access will be provided by DBH, and may be reported as taxable earnings.
The employee will be expected to provide their own food and other essential living items.
Qualifications
Required Experience
Demonstrated experience in the following areas is essential:
- Ability to work diligently and maintain company standards without prompting.
- Ability to work independently and under direct supervision.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and clients.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to motivate and engage clients.
- General understanding of mental illness and substance use disorders.
- Understanding of the role of support in helping adults with serious and persistent mental illness and often co-occurring substance use conditions.
- Ability to maintain client confidentiality.
- The Home Skills Specialist must have a broad base of experience with life circumstances and possess a diverse view of what residents need to have to better their lives.
The selected candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screening. DBH will not hire individuals currently using illegal drugs or abusing alcohol; therefore, making employment at DBH conditional upon successfully passing pre-employment drug screening by providing a valid sample. Candidates who are offered employment are required to report for a drug screen at an Intermountain WorkMed location within 24 hours of being requested to do so by the DBH Human Resources Department.
Davis Behavioral Health works with Federal grants and must comply with the Federal drug laws, including no use of medical marijuana.
Skills/Abilities
The Home Skills Specialist must possess the following skills, abilities, and qualifications to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Proficiently utilize required systems and/or equipment related to performing essential functions of the job.
- Ability to independently manage schedule and assigned caseload, including scheduling appointments with clients, attending required meetings, coordination of care, supervision, and other work activities related to the completion of essential job functions.
- Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license.
- A clean driving record is also required to utilize the DBH vehicle fleet.
The successful candidates must have the ability to model and teach independent living skills. In addition, the Home Skills Specialist will be required to be a positive role model for how to spend leisure time, healthy and appropriate activities to do during down time/when bored. They will need to conduct discussions and teach basic hygiene, good boundaries, housekeeping, cooking, and the ability to face life's challenges.
Preference will be given for applicants who have proficient computer skills and experience/education in social work or psychology.
Employment Schedule
Work schedules at DBH are established to meet the needs of our clients and the agency. Program Supervisors, with the approval of Program Directors, determine the specific schedules for their assigned departments and have the authority to ask employees to work a different shift and/or in a different location on a short-term or permanent basis to meet the departments' needs.
The Home Skills Specialist is required to maintain 20-25 hours per week of office hours with two (2) days off per week. Office hours may be flexible for the Home Skills Specialist to attend class, perform other personal duties, or maintain other employment, if necessary.
