Job Summary
Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance. Administers policies that directly affect subordinate staff. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Provide priority setting and work flow analysis.
The Manager of Athletic Training will serve as the primary administrator and supervisor of all athletic training duties at the Orthopaedic Institute and WB locations and satellites. The Manager will work with the Chief of Sports Medicine and the Director of Primary Care Sports Medicine in ensuring that the athletic training (AT) staff is properly supporting the attendings in their clinical practices. They will oversee clinic operations and meet with the attending staff on a weekly basis. The Manager will maintain communication with the sports medicine and Orthopaedic Institute leadership team to ensure the highest quality of care.
As part of the PlaySafe Program, the Manager will serve as the head athletic trainer and primary administrator for all program operations and growth. He/She will provide mentorship and support to the Sr. and Jr. AT staff with their assigned high school sites and duties. The Manager will work closely with athletic directors, academic administrators, and athletic commissioners in establishing and ensuring a safe and quality athletic program and facility.
The Manager of Athletic Training will be the primary administrator for all AT involvement in projects and event coverage. He/She will identify Sr. and Jr. AT staff to assist or lead projects as needed. The Manager will supervise the staff progress in projects and maintain communication with the sports medicine leadership team to ensure the best possible outcome for each assigned project.
The athletic trainer will work primary from the Orthopaedic Institute on the Mission Bay Campus of UCSF. The position entails a clinical component of physician support, outreach component of on-site athletic trainer coverage, and a supervision component of existing AT staff members.
Clinically, the employee will spend time in a specialty clinic or pod assisting with the day to day operations. The athletic trainer will be asked to room patients, assist in the patient intake process, and pull up any necessary records relevant to the patient visit. The athletic trainer will also provide physician support by assisting with patient education and post-operative procedures as requested. Other responsibilities include assisting with the daily administration of clinic duties, and other tasks as assigned.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $78,900 - $167,300 (Annual Rate).

- Advanced degree in related area.
- Bachelor's degree in related area.
- Master’s degree in related field.
- 5 or more years’ experience working as a Certified Athletic Trainer in a competitive environment (graduate assistant years not applicable).
- 3 to 5 years’ experience with project management and operational management.
- Advanced knowledge of athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment.
- Demonstrated experience supervising programs involved in the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
- Demonstration of recent experience with sports medicine/event coverage/first responder care of the high school athlete or beyond.
- Solid knowledge of therapeutic techniques and injury management applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
- Strong manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
- Decision-making, analytical, problem solving and leadership skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills with strong ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines.
- Strong written and oral communication.
- Computer skills in programs related to job duties.
- Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments.
- Strong ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with others, including athletes, team physicians, faculty, staff and others in the athletic department.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group.
Preferred Qualifications
- For positions associated with Sports Medicine, must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times, avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
- Thorough knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
- Knowledge of human resource related policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of medical center goals and objectives associated with athletic and recreation programs.
- Previous experience working in a clinical setting with physicians and office assistants.
- Demonstration of recent experience of staff management and administrative duties (Sr. AT or Head AT experience applicable).
- Exercise Physiology, research, and performance testing skills and interests.
- Previous experience with HTML, website, and database entry.
License/Certification
- NATA Athletic Trainer Certification (ATC)
- BLS / CPR Certification.
- Current certification and in good standing with the Board of Certification
