About the Department
The Housing and Neighborhood Development Department has an exciting opportunity for a temporary, non-benefited, part-time Love Your Block Fellow! The ideal candidate will have a passion for revitalizing neighborhoods one block at a time.
This is a temporary, non-benefited, part-time position up to 17.5 hours per week (not to exceed 233 hours per quarter and 1039 hours in the FY). The fellowship is anticipated to run through August 2026. There are no benefits offered with this position. This opportunity is funded by the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation (BCPI) at Johns Hopkins’ Love Your Block.
SUMMARY: The City of Reno Housing and Neighborhood Development Division is seeking a dynamic and organized individual to serve as the Love Your Block Fellow. The Love Your Block Program is a high-impact service strategy that connects city leaders with community residents to help revitalize their neighborhoods one block at a time. The ideal candidate in this position will play a pivotal role in supporting the successful implementation of Love Your Block grant projects by overseeing project management activities and tracking project metrics to measure impact and outcomes.
Distinguishing Characteristics: The Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation (BCPI) at Johns Hopkins’ Love Your Block program brings city leaders and residents together to build stronger neighborhoods, one block at a time. Cities participating in Love Your Block invite community groups to identify priority projects and award mini-grants to support neighborhood-driven solutions that the community can implement. The City of Reno Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) Department was recently awarded a $100,000 Love Your Block grant which presents an exciting opportunity for the HAND department to make significant strides in addressing neighborhood blight concerns.
Supervision Received and Exercised: Work may be reviewed upon completion to ensure compliance with housing local and federal regulations. Direction is provided at the departmental level.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Coordinate and oversee the implementation of Love Your Block grant projects, working closely with project partners, city staff, and community stakeholders to ensure timely and successful project execution.
Lead the day-to-day project management of the Love Your Block program.
Assist in development and maintenance of project plans, timelines, and budgets to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budgetary constraints.
Monitor project progress and milestones, proactively identifying and addressing any issues or challenges that may arise during implementation.
Track project metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure project impact and outcomes, including but not limited to community engagement, volunteer participation, and physical improvements to neighborhoods.
Develop and implement systems for data collection, analysis, and reporting to effectively track project metrics and communicate progress to stakeholders.
Conduct regular site visits and inspections to monitor project activities and ensure compliance with grant requirements and regulations.
Collaborate with city officials, community partners, and residents to promote community engagement and participation in Love Your Block projects.
Prepare reports, presentations, and other materials to communicate project updates, outcomes, and impact to internal and external stakeholders.
Support knowledge sharing and capacity building efforts by documenting best practices, lessons learned, and success stories from Love Your Block projects.
Develop and deliver training to residents to assist in mini-grant application completion.
Create and implement an outreach plan to effectively engage with diverse community members and promote the program and mini-grant opportunity to potential grantees.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Combinations of education and experience that are equivalent to the following minimum qualifications are acceptable.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, business administrations, social work or a related field is preferred.
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in project management, community development, or a related field is preferred.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid driver's license or otherwise demonstrate the ability to independently get to and from multiple work locations as required.
COMPETENCIES

- Community ties and have a track record of building local relationships.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

- Data collection, analysis, and reporting, preferably in a community development or nonprofit setting is preferred.
- Project management principles, methodologies, and tools.
- Grant management and compliance requirements.
- Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
- Coordinate and participate in the community development programs.
- Understand the organization and operation of the City and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
- Understand, interpret, and apply administrative and departmental policies and procedures as well as pertinent laws, regulations, and ordinances.

- Participate in the development and administration of goals, objectives, and procedures.

- Effectively represent the City to outside individuals and agencies to accomplish the goals and objectives of the unit.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
- Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments; travel from site to site; occasional exposure to outside weather conditions; extensive public contact.
- Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an indoor and outdoor setting; to walk, stand, or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate assigned vehicles; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
