About the Department
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical infrastructure that supports and enhances the lives of Norfolk’s residents, businesses, and visitors. This includes the City’s storm water system, street network, and waste management and recycling systems. The department is comprised of eight divisions that work together to ensure safe and efficient commutes, attractive neighborhoods, and clean, well-maintained streets and sidewalks.
Keep Norfolk Beautiful engages residents and businesses in improving the city through litter cleanups, volunteer programs, and educational outreach. These efforts promote a shared understanding of how our actions impact public systems and reinforce our collective responsibility to maintain a safe and clean city.
Position Duties
The City of Norfolk's Keep Norfolk Beautiful (KNB) Division, part of the Department of Public Works, promotes environmental stewardship through education, outreach, and volunteer cleanup projects. KNB is seeking a dedicated Program Assistant who is passionate about sustainability to support its initiatives and collaborate closely with Norfolk’s Waste Management and Public Works teams.
This multifaceted role combines responsibilities as a Budget and Fiscal Technician, Office Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, and Community Cleanup Assistant. The Program Assistant will handle administrative tasks including office management, data entry, customer service, and procurement. In addition, the role oversees volunteer coordination and supports events and outreach efforts related to litter prevention, recycling education, sustainability, beautification, and cleanup activities throughout the city.

- Live Green Norfolk
- Various educational and awareness activities with community partnerships and in support of the Public Outreach Coordinators and Programs Manager
Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Education/Experience: Direct experience working for the City of Norfolk at KNB is preferred or for an extensive experience working in an environmentally sensitive program with volunteer coordination.
Additional Preferred Experience: Customer Service, Event Coordination, Volunteer Coordination, Social Media Content Development, and Budget Support -Bookkeeping, Purchasing and Procurement
