ESL/Adult Education Intern

Internship Summary

The ESL/Adult Education Intern supports LaAmistad’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program for Latino adults. Interns contribute directly to a high-quality learning experience by supporting instruction, communication, engagement, and program logistics.

This is a unique opportunity to build cultural competency, practice bilingual communication, and develop skills in adult education and nonprofit operations.


Duties & Responsibilities:

Classroom & Curriculum Support

  • Observe ESL classes and report insights to the ESL Program Coordinator
  • Assist instructors and suggest improvements for classroom engagement
  • Help prepare classrooms with updated materials and supply kits


Program Facilitation & Student Support

  • Assist with new session logistics (student registration, placement exams, payments)
  • Send bilingual confirmation emails with class details and book links
  • Follow up with students regarding attendance and withdrawals in Spanish
  • Call students with incorrect contact information post-registration


Language Exchange & Engagement

  • Plan and facilitate bi-weekly “Coffee Hour” conversation sessions
  • Create bilingual discussion prompts and guide volunteers
  • Brainstorm ideas for bilingual events and engagement initiatives
  • Help maintain a student blog to encourage language use outside of class


Administrative Support

  • Draft and update bilingual email templates
  • Enter attendance and track student progress in Excel
  • Assist in preparing student certificates and teacher resources
  • Update instructor pacing guides and keep materials organized in classroom “Black Boxes”
  • Help create and send reminder messages for early registration
  • Return calls, track outreach, and communicate with students in Spanish
  • Translate documents and respond to language support requests
  • Send class confirmations and update program databases
  • Support program events, workshops, and teacher training logistics


Skills & Qualifications

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (oral and written)
  • Strong Spanish writing and communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and proactive
  • Friendly, adaptable, and committed to service
  • Strong multitasking and client service skills
  • Comfortable working in person at LaAmistad sites in Atlanta


Commitment

  • Time: 15–20 hours/week (3–4 days/week)
  • Term: August–December 2025 (with option to extend into Spring 2026)
