POSITION SUMMARY

Fennemore seeks a full-time DIRECTOR OF ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE to support our growing Accounting and Finance Department in Phoenix, AZ, and beyond. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the DIRECTOR OF ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE will be instrumental in driving financial strategy, overseeing both accounting operations and financial planning, and leading a high-performing team to support the firm’s continued growth and success. 

 

This leader will oversee our financial, accounting, tax, and payroll operations, ensuring the integrity of our accounting and reporting processes, supporting financial strategy, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations. They will also provide vital financial insights to steer the firm’s direction and drive profitable growth. The DIRECTOR OF ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE will directly oversee a team of four individuals in the accounting, payroll, and FP&A teams. This position will be on-site in our Phoenix, AZ office for the first six months; a hybrid schedule will be considered thereafter.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  • Strategic Leadership and Development: Mentor and develop the accounting, payroll, and FP&A teams, promoting skill enhancement, professional growth, and a collaborative work environment.
  • Accounting and Financial Operations Oversight: Manage the team that prepares the month-end close, analyzes financial statements, reports to shareholders, and prepares tax returns and reports for government regulatory agencies. Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting on a modified cash basis.
  • Internal Controls and Compliance: Develop and enforce a robust system of internal controls to safeguard financial assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Treasury and Banking Relationship Management: Work with strategic banking partners to enhance cash management and cash flow.
  • Financial Analysis and Pricing: Offer strategic financial analysis and insights, identify and evaluate trends and risks, including migrating to fixed-fee work, and propose actionable strategies to improve financial performance and risk management. Evaluate firm and practice group performance trends and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Leadership of Financial Operations: Provide strategic leadership and oversight to the accounting and payroll departments, ensuring a seamless integration of financial operations and fostering a high-performance team culture. Collaborate with leadership on expansion initiatives, pricing strategies, capital planning, and risk assessment. 
  • Audit and Tax Preparation: Manage the team that facilitates any audit process and all tax preparation, ensuring compliance and accuracy in all financial obligations and reporting.
  • Drive automation and process improvements across workflow, incorporating AI  when appropriate. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management, with a preference for backgrounds in professional services environments.
  • Strong technological aptitude with experience implementing modern finance systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles, practices, standards, laws, and regulations.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and leadership capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead a diverse team, fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and excellence.
  • Excellent project management and process documentation skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in engaging effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • A high degree of integrity, dependability, confidentiality, and a robust sense of urgency and results orientation.
