Library Media Specialist
Description:
To serve as a library teacher, digital literacy specialist and instructional partner in designing, implementing and assessing best instructional practices that promote student centered learning experiences that foster reading and digital literacy skills as part of instructional programs cross curricula.
Responsibilities:
Develop and promote the library as a collaborative student-centered environment that advances creative
problem-solving and interdisciplinary learning.
Collaborate with faculty on teaching research and digital literacy skills in context.
Consult with faculty, as a specialist, on digital literacy resources and effective learning strategies.
Collaborate with Instructional Coaches and/or Instructional Technology Specialists to suggest and demonstrate strategies, resources and technologies that promote digital literacy skills.
Serve as a digital literacy resource to students, faculty and administration.
Promote an appreciation of literature and encourage life-long literacy habits.
Create and maintain a current and curriculum relevant collection.
Inform faculty on new materials the library acquires.
Maintain an effective system for cataloging all library materials, and instruct faculty and students on use of the system.
Maintain strong ties with the public library system and other district librarians.
Perform other job-related duties as may be assigned from time to time by the building Principal and/or Director of Technology and Library Media.
Essential Functions of the Job:
Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of curriculum development, instruction, assessment and digital literacy skills.
Collaborate with faculty in designing, implementing and assessing best instructional practices that promote student-centered learning experiences that foster digital literacy skills.
Work with school personnel to review curricula goals and to identify, support and implement best instructional strategies that promote digital literacy skills.
Organize, facilitate and assess professional development opportunities that promote best instructional practices and digital literacy skills.
Collaborate with students and school personnel to develop the library as a collaborative student-centered environment that advances critical thinking, creative problem-solving and interdisciplinary learning.
Train and oversee the work of the paraprofessional library media staff, student interns and volunteers.
Attend professional development and networking opportunities for library media specialists.

Develop and promote the library as a collaborative student-centered environment that advances digital literacy skills, creative problem-solving and interdisciplinary learning.
Create and maintain a current and curriculum relevant collection.

employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Ability to work in a normal classroom and school building environment.
Ability to move freely about the building to perform duties with students and teachers.
Additional Information:
Master's Degree preferred
Licensed, or eligible for licensure in Library by the Massachusetts Department of
Elementary and Secondary Education, with demonstrated teaching experience
OR
Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as
a teacher, with demonstrated experience of teaching practices, instructional technology,
professional development creation and facilitation, and knowledge of DESE’s Digital
Literacy and Computer Science Curriculum Framework.

Strong interpersonal skills
Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.OR.I.)
Successful completion of national background check (fingerprinting)
