AMDA College of the Performing Arts, with campuses in New York City and Hollywood, is one of the foremost post-secondary performing arts colleges in the country. The Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Vocal Performance for Commercial Music offers an essential blend of training in contemporary vocal techniques, songwriting, audio and video production, and instrumental studies. The intense, conservatory-style training provides pending grads with a robust set of skills and a deep understanding of Commercial Music. Foundational curriculum includes individual voice instruction, audio recording production, music fundamentals, commercial music appreciation, and vocal fitness and injury prevention. Companion courses in iconic songwriters, vocal improvisation, art as activism, and commercial music video production help students create fully-realized vocal recordings within a variety of performance genres and styles (including but not limited to Pop, R&B, Country, Soul, Rock, Gospel, Hip-Hop, Folk, Latin, Alternative, etc).
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Maintaining current knowledge in subject matter areas as it relates to vocal performance and commercial music literature  
  • Teaching in accordance with established curriculum, course outlines, and class schedules 
  • Implementing contemporary vocal techniques, instructing students in healthy, sustainable vocal production across a variety of contemporary genres, including but not limited to Pop, R&B, Country, Soul, Rock, Gospel, Hip-Hop, Folk, Latin, and Alternative
  • Developing and directing contemporary  vocal arrangements including repertoire for small, medium, and large vocal ensembles while incorporating stylistically appropriate harmonies, vocal textures
  • Creating unique arrangements of contemporary songs, adapting commercial music repertoire for performance, with a focus on artistic interpretation and performance dynamics
  • Leading rehearsals and providing instruction on stage presence, microphone technique, and live sound communication for both solo and ensemble settings culminating in showcase-style performances
  • Fostering versatility, guiding students in performing authentically in multiple genres, emphasizing stylistic accuracy, improvisation, and interpretation
  • Integrating commercial music industry practices incorporating real-world performance expectations, rehearsal etiquette, and industry standards
  • Developing songwriting and audio production
  • Collaborating with private voice instructors to reinforce healthy vocal habits and integrate individual vocal goals
  • Supporting students in an environment which emphasizes learning, encourages free discussion of ideas and critical thinking 
  • Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics both online and in-person 
  • Fulfilling professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member 
  • Utilizing online classrooms and sustaining student engagement when requested 
  • Consistent communication and accurate reporting  
  • Contribution to the school community, including: 
    • Committee Participation 
    • Active Engagement in required training and initiatives 
    • Viewing student performances 
  • Upholding AMDA’s core values of equity and inclusion in the classroom and commitment to an environment of student safety and support 
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or commensurate performance/professional experience
  • Must have strong sense of musicality
  • An appreciation for the traditions of performing arts academic setting 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills; style that emphasizes collaboration, teamwork, and facilitation 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills 
  • Commitment to academic excellence, exceptional service and providing a dynamic climate for life-long learning 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement instructional approaches with the effective use of technology. 
  • Ability to use effective strategies to engage students in their learning both in-person and online 
  • Ability to appreciate alternative viewpoints; ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people 
  • Have a commitment and sensitivity to, as well as an understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles 
  • Experience with Canvas LMS preferred 
  • Experience with songwriting and/or music production preferred 
  • Knowledge of current commercial music artists and catalogs preferred 
  • AMDA differentiates itself from other performing arts colleges by having students learn from "working faculty." Applicants must have performance experience within the industry; preference will be given to instructors with recent/current performance credits  
  • Experience with a variety of genres is a plus 
 
Position Information:
  • This is an adjunct faculty position working less than 29 hours per week. Schedule based on department needs.
  • The pay range for this position is $40 - $60 per hour for classroom teaching. Administrative tasks assigned or approved outside of classroom teaching hours will be paid at a standard hourly rate of $35/hour.
  • This position is subject to a background check upon a conditional offer of employment and a reference check.
  • This is a fully in-person Position.
