Student Intern, CDP Homicide Unit

Position Duties
Under supervision of a Sergeant or other superior officer, performs general and special police duty in an assigned district or unit in the preservation of law and order. Protect life and property. Enforces laws and ordinances. Prevents and detects crime. Work involves an element of personal danger. Must be willing and capable of carrying any Divisional issued weapon and wearing any Divisional issued equipment. Testifies at administrative or judicial proceedings as required. Acts without direct supervision and exercises independent judgement in meeting complex situations. Performs other job-related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
A High School Diploma or GED is required. Must be at least 21 years of age. A valid State of Ohio Driver's License is required. LATERAL POLICE OFFICER - In addition to the above, An Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. Three years of full time paid continuous experience within the last four years as the equivalent of a Police Officer in the State of Ohio is required. Must have Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (O.P.O.T.A.) certification.

Internship Title: CDP Homicide Student Intern with the Cleveland Division of Police/Public Safety
Location: In-person, 1300 Ontario St, Cleveland, Ohio 44114
Work Schedule: Between 20-40 hours per week depending on unit schedules and operations.
Flexible scheduling between 7am and 3pm, Monday - Friday
Duration: Recruiting for the Fall semester; August through October 2025.
(Optional: internship can be extended if agreed on by both the student and unit supervisor)
Compensation: Unpaid/Offering Academic Credit

Insert Description
This position will provide an opportunity for the student to gain meaningful, real-world experience in the advancement of Criminal Justice within a municipal public sector CDP/Public Safety department. The CDP Homicide Student Intern will assist in projects that may include, but are not limited to, conducting confidential and sensitive investigations involving Homicides, reviewing investigative material and related documentation and general office work that supports the business operations.
Examples of Duties
- Reviewing Cold Cases for potential leads,
- Reviewing cellphone and/or social media materials for potential evidence
- Assisting the Homicide Unit Analyst in reviewing surveillance video for potential evidence
Additional Minimum Qualifications: To be considered for this internship you must:
Candidate must be enrolled in an accredited college or university with an interest in Criminal Justice or related field
- Strong fluency in Microsoft Office products, such as Power Point, Word, etc.
- Ability to work independently, exercising responsible judgment and initiative
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Must have excellent verbal communication skills and exceptional interpersonal skills
- Candidate must be available to work within the prescribed hours or if flexible hours or offered, during the season in which he or she is employed.
Preferred Qualifications: Degree seeking college student majoring in fields related to Criminal Justice
