Description
PURPOSE
To select and obtain grocery, dairy, and bulk products and to supervise staff to meet established objectives for sales, margin, and customer service.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Purchasing:
- Provide feedback to pricing coordinator on overall pricing and pass along cost updates from vendors to retail team
- Maintain a positive relationship with vendors
- Assist in vetting new vendors for dept, and consider overall product mix
- Research new product, and pass on information to retail team
- Evaluate sales weekly, by period and quarterly at the category and subcat level
- Adjust purchasing as needed both seasonally and for holidays, consult retail team as needed
- Ensure proper receiving by department staff according to procedures for handling invoices
- Review invoices for pricing and discount accuracy; ensuring accurate separation of inventory categories and subcategories, and identify credits and mispicks
- Review invoices monthly for accuracy
- Visit the warehouse as needed to review any store specific supply
- Participate in quarterly inventory counts, and weekly all store meetings
- Coordinate with Grocery and Bulk Buyers to ensure all orders reflect department needs
POS:
- Update items and add new items into the POS system
- Print tags for departments as needed, making sure all tags are up to date and present
- Assist in posting signage including but not limited to Co-op deals, sales, etc.
- Be fully trained on the front end of SMS and be able to cashier as needed in the store
Merchandising:
- Order merchandise and maintain inventory control to minimize out-of-stocks and overstocks and maximize sales and turnover
- Ensure in conjunction with the Store Manager and floor staff that shelves and coolers are fully stocked and rotated to ensure freshness and turnover
- Manage back stock areas
- Set stocking priorities for department staff; stock items as needed, assist with receiving
- Plan attractive displays; order sufficient merchandise to stock displays for period of display; do periodic comparisons with competitors
- Maintain grocery areas for cleanliness and appearance according to established standards
- Mark-down items as needed to reduce losses, record shrink for lost product
- Ensure accurate, up-to-date price labeling of department items; get new item information to POS Staff before item arrives so product can be immediately placed on shelf
- Provide prompt, friendly, courteous customer service
- Adhere to all product policies and notify vendors of policies when purchasing new products
Customer Service:
- Treat people fairly, courteously, and with respect
- Ensure a high standard of customer service storewide, and esp in dept
- Ensure quick response to customer questions and concerns.
- Process Pre orders in a timely manner and communicate with members as needed
Financial Performance:
- Develop and administer a departmental budget with assistance of the Store Manager
- Attain sales and margin goals for the department
- Review departmental financial reports; take corrective action as needed
Personnel:
- Hire, train and supervise grocery department staff
- Conduct performance evaluation of department staff and participate in the evaluation of other staff
- Ensure that all department workers have up-to-date job descriptions and periodic reviews
- Coordinate with Bulk Supervisor to schedule hours for all department staff within payroll allocation
- Hold departmental staff meetings monthly
Other Duties:
- Attend management or other meetings if scheduled and as directed
- Ensure, in coordination with the Store Manager, that all areas meet lawful standards for food handling safety and carry out sanitation inspections monthly
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the General Manager

- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, use stairs, and be on feet for long periods
- Computer literate including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and using email
