About the Department

The Science Educator plays a key role in supporting the delivery of engaging and educational experiences for diverse visitors, including school groups, civic organizations, and the general public. This position helps to inspire curiosity about the natural world and foster a deeper appreciation for science through hands-on lessons, programs, and experiments. Responsible for program planning, teaching, training, and event coordination at the science museum or nature center. The Science Educator works independently under general supervision to develop programs and educational resources, ensuring that all activities are informative, impactful, and age appropriate. The Science Educator is also responsible for evaluating program effectiveness, overseeing safety protocols and facility readiness, and managing resources, including inventory and equipment.

Position Duties

  • Plans, organizes, teaches and coordinates visits for school groups, civic groups and other outside organizations.

  • Coordinates in-services interpretation training programs for schoolteachers, recreation staff, volunteers and youth leaders.

  • Coordinates production of pre-visit printed, video or other materials for orientation of prospective visitors.

  • Produces, distributes, collects, and analyzes evaluation program instruments relating to the facility.

  • Develops activities, materials, and programs that complement the science curriculum of Palm Beach County public, private, pre-schools, summer camps, etc. that are engaging, informative, and age appropriate.

  • Develops educational programs for visitors at the Nature Center or Science Museum.

  • Prepares educational information for public relations, fund raising and educational statistics for grants.

  • Supervises participants utilizing the facility; enforces policies and maintains order.

  • Inspects facility equipment for proper condition and safety.

  • Issues facility equipment

  • Maintains proper inventories and monitors use at the facility.

  • Plans and organizes special events both offsite and at the facility/site; creates and distributes fliers.

  • Develops schedules for the facility and posts information regarding center activities.

Related tasks:

  • Registers public for events, trips, classes, etc. using RecTrac or similar software

  • Maintains records and prepares reports of activities and programs conducted at the facility.

  • Maintains contacts with teachers at public, private, pre-schools, summer camps, etc.

  • Assists in planning and evaluating permanent and temporary exhibits.

  • Coordinates, assists, and/or directs outside activities such as: Outreach, talks in schools, and special events.

  • Manage Outreach teachers, workshop teachers.

  • Assists in the recruitment, training, and supervision of seasonal and part-time employees and volunteer personnel of the facility.

  • Promotes and publicizes the image and activities of the facility throughout the community through social media, print, webpage, and other marketing vehicles.

  • Participates in budget preparation and monitoring for educational programs and events.

  • Performs related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • General knowledge operation of a Nature Center or Science Museum.

  • General knowledge of temporary/visiting science exhibits, permanent science exhibits and displays and related rules and regulations.

For the Children’s Science Explorium:

  • General knowledge of the Physical Sciences.

  • Local educational and curriculum science standards for elementary grades.

  • Local educational and curriculum science standards for elementary and middle school grades.

  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of museum planning, programming, and operations; general knowledge of fund-raising practices.

  • Some knowledge of simple cash accounting principles. 

For Gumbo Limbo Nature Center:

  • Local habitats and environments including species found in Boca Raton and surrounding area.

  • Safe handling of resident animals including snakes and other reptiles, amphibians, insects, and arachnids.

Skilled in

  • Use of technology to create lesson plans that meet local curriculum standards for target grades.

  • Creating promotional and marketing materials for programs.

  • Problem solving skills to adapt to changes and resolve issues that may arise during programs.

Ability to:

  • Develop and deliver educational programs for school groups, civic organizations, and other visitors.

  • Create fun and engaging science activities that align with local educational standards.

  • Plan and set up special events, both on-site and off-site that appeal to a wide variety of user groups.

  • Enforce safety rules in a public facility to ensure a safe environment for all participants.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, associates, and the general public.

  • Interpret temporary/visiting science exhibits and displays.

  • Plan and supervise the work of volunteers and seasonal employees.

Other Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in EducationBiology, Marine Science, Physics, Engineering Science or related fields and 

  • One (1) year of experience in presenting and/or facilitating educational activities for a Nature Center, Science Museum or similar establishment

  • Possession of a valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Children’s Science Explorium

  • Familiarity and knowledge of physical sciences including chemistry, physics, astronomy

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center

  • Familiarity and working knowledge of natural habitats in South Florida, including common flora and fauna.

  • Canoe, kayak, and snorkeling experience

Additional experience is accepted as a minimum requirement in lieu of the postsecondary degree on the following basis: additional four (4) years in lieu of the bachelor’s degree, and additional two (2) years in lieu of an associate degree.

Schedule:
Generally Tuesday-Saturday, 8:00am – 5:00pm. 
Evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
