SUMMARY

Directs, plans, provides administrative oversight to hospice operations under the direction of the President/CEO. Responsible for program development, assessing and improving models of care, monitoring trends in the hospice field and enhancing a learning environment. Assumes overall responsibility for the clinical (non-medical) aspects of the hospice and palliative care programs. Responsible for clinical quality and financial outcomes, continuity and delivery of services. Manages and develops clinical and support staff. Ensures clinical standards and outcomes are met. Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, the Joint Commission and NHPCO standards. Performs in a manner which aids the agency in meeting its Mission.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Nursing and Clinical Ancillary Services

  • Be present and maintain relationships with those that you oversee and all other employees within the Alive organization. 
  • Plan, implement, coordinate, supervise, monitor and evaluate all programs related to Clinical and Ancillary patient services. 
  • Recruit, hire, and supervise the staff necessary to run the clinical service areas employed by Alive focusing on mission, strategic plan and personal improvement. 
  • Develop, maintain, and revise clinical policies, procedures and practice guidelines in collaboration with professional discipline representatives. 
  • Monitor clinical and ancillary staff compliance with appropriate orientation, staff development, in service education and other educational plans. 
  • Direct all aspects of patient care from admission to death, in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer. 
  • Assist the Vice President, of Quality and Compliance with survey visits by regulatory agencies. 
  • Accountable with the Vice President of Finance for direct patient care cost in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer. 
  • Monitor clinical and ancillary staff compliance with Performance Improvement plans. 
  • Provide guidance in use of clinical paths to achieve optimal patient/family care. 
  • Review medical records for appropriateness of hospice admission or continuation of services for the entire patient census according to Medicare Conditions of Participation established guidelines and agency criteria. 
  • Serve on the Internal Quality and Compliance Committee representing the clinical team. o Serve on the Internal Ethics Committee with primary administrative oversight. 
  • Collaborate in developing interdisciplinary plan of care with attending and consulting physicians as well as IDT. 
  • Make provisions for/attends team meetings. 
  • Shadow patient visits when indicated. 
  • Make provisions for 24-hour a day, 7-day a week on-call administrator coverage. 
  • Manage resources within allocated budget. o Ensure consistency in level of practice according to agency standards. 
  • Encourage professional development of direct reports. 
  • Develop, implement, and communicate plans and programs in alignment with Strategic Plan. 
  • Provide tools and support to accomplish strategic objectives.
  • Assist the Chief Executive Officer in strategic planning, development and implementation.  
  • Assist Vice President of Finance with annual budget development and monthly variance review for responsible areas.
  • Assists in the planning and development of all patient education materials.
  • Facilitate and provide general oversight of work groups as committees change with initiatives in regard to clinical practices.
  • Promote programs to increase access to hospice and palliative care, increase excellence in practice and evolve life-long learning and competency-based practice.
  • Assist Vice President of Quality and Compliance to develop and evaluate outcomes to improve services and practice.
  • Assist in research activities related to clinical practice.

Executive Services:

  • Attend quarterly Board meetings
  • Participate in community education programs, professional organizations and legislative activity.
  • Maintain and develop knowledge of evolving hospice and palliative care philosophy and practices.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Medical Officer to continually improve the quality and cost effectiveness of care.
  • Promote the advancement of hospice knowledge by participating on the appropriate committees of the State and National Organizations.
  • Serve as a hospice representative to the medical community to inform physicians and other health care professionals of the availability and scope of hospice services.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer related to development of the referral network for both hospice and palliative care services.
  • May act as Chief Executive Officer when CEO is unavailable, upon request.

Requirements


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Current driver's license and automobile insurance as required by Tennessee State Law. Active RN license in the state of Tennessee or compact license.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master's degree (M.A.) preferred or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of three years senior management experience required.
