Job Description:

Summary:

The Arboretum and Landscape Manager serves as planner/designer and project manager providing guidance and supervision for landscape and grounds-related projects, operations, and maintenance. The incumbent serves as a leader and guide to provide vision and management for the American University Arboretum and Gardens. The incumbent will manage a diverse set of responsibilities with minimal supervision. They need to have dedication and display a passion for the position and the future of the AU Arboretum and Gardens to continue to build and grow it the arboretum to its full potential. The Arboretum and Landscape Manager routinely interfaces with the grounds maintenance staff to assist with grounds maintenance inspections and directs landscape projects as required. This position requires minimal supervision. The incumbent collaborates with university executives, faculty, staff, students, alumni, neighbors and visitors to promote and develop the AU Arboretum and Gardens. The incumbent works with multi-disciplinary teams to support, develop, and assist with project management and directing consultant professionals to meet the operational requirements of the university.

Essential Functions:

1.) Arboretum and Gardens Management

  • Leads and coordinates activities related to the Arboretum.

  • Serves as a member of the AU Arboretum and Gardens Oversight Committee.

  • Developing long range Arboretum and Gardens strategic planning in coordination with the Campus Plan.

  • Is a leading member of the annual Campus Beautification volunteer event.

  • Manages and updates campus wide tree inventory (Arc GIS).

  • Reviews consultant plans and provides recommendations to protect and preserve trees, plant material, and other arboretum resources. 

  • Assists and supports the work of Facilities Management Grounds staff to maintain award winning campus grounds.

  • Promote and support experiential learning opportunities for students by participating in classroom projects, support for student club activities, independent study, and student internships.

  • Prepares landscape designs including planting plans for in-house enhancement projects – Campus Beautification Day, Annual plantings for graduation, and more.

  • Manage landscape and grounds-related projects through the development of work scope and playing a lead role in the selection of landscape contractors and consultants to ensure the university receives quality grounds O&M services.

  • Prepares construction documents, specifications, and graphics to effectively communicate the needs of the university and secures public approvals or permits as applicable.

  • Monitors landscape during construction to contribute to compliance assurance with contract and construction documents and provides commissioning support services as required/requested.

2.) Leads Efforts to Promote American University Through the Arboretum

  • Leads guided arboretum tours for a variety of groups.

  • Creates and presents presentations to a variety of groups.

  • Leads efforts to apply for and continue to win design and management awards.

  • Maintains membership and networking with professional associations.

  • Promotes the Arboretum to faculty to incorporate as a tool into classroom curriculums.

  • Provide support to Admissions office and Student Affairs to attract new students and enhance the student experience.

  • Support and expand connections to academic offerings and experiential learning opportunities on campus across all disciplines.

  • Lead educational outreach activities related to the AU Arboretum and Gardens both within the campus and extended communities.

  • Support AU’s hosting of the Green Industry Field Day annual event.

  • Work with FM’s social media coordinator to maintain and grow AU Arboretum and Grounds outreach on all social media platforms.

  • Carries out University Site Strategic O&M Planning for hardscape, landscape, utilities and site amenities to contribute to an aesthetically pleasing and functional campus environment.

  • Contributes to the development of university landscape design standards and site design guidelines.

  • Creates documents and provides input to Facility Management’s data collection and CMMS processes to ensure complete and accurate storage and tracking of information.

  • Pursue training and on-going education, to improve job performance levels and to remain current with innovative approaches in the green industry profession.

  • Performs snow and ice removal and apply deicing materials to ensure the safety of public areas for the university community. 

3.) Support Fundraising Efforts

  • Supports the office of Development and Alumni Relations to solicit and cultivate donor gifts to the Arboretum.

  • Maintain records of Arboretum related gifts.

  • Lead, design and implementation of donor gift enhancement projects.

  • Support and grow Friends of the Arboretum donor membership.

  • Conducts zone walks for the purpose of identifying maintenance improvement opportunities.

  • Helps create maintenance plans to track and monitor progress in the field assuring landscape design intent is achieved campus wide.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full-Time.

  • 35 hours per week.

Salary Range:

  • $92,000 - $100,711 annually.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • 4-6 years of relevant experience.

Travel Required:

  • There is minimal travel required for this position.
