About the Department
Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties involved in the care and keeping of animals.
FLSA status: Non-exempt.

Position Duties
Impound, process and maintain all animals received into the City’s custody; feed, water, vaccinate, dip, bathe and perform diagnostic tests; clean and disinfect kennels, cages, equipment and trucks; maintain an aggressive parasite and disease prevention program; prepare inventory reports for pet food and shelter supplies, enter work orders; stock feed bins and other shelter supplies; maintain and submit required documents for handling controlled substances.
Maintain required MSDS log sheets; perform preventive maintenance in the kennel area, ensure equipment is in proper working condition; medicate animals, prepare specimens for rabies examination, perform animal euthanasia, dispose of deceased carcasses; assist adopters in selecting a pet for adoption, assist with photographs for local media, monitor Department of Correction (DOC) inmates.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Various breeds of dogs, cats and other domestic animals.
The care and feeding of domestic animals.
Basic animal identification and behavior.
Animal diseases and prevention.
City and department policies, procedures and organizational functions.
Skill in:
Euthanizing and disposing of dead animals.
Safe animal handling procedures.
Communicating effectively, orally and in writing.
Maintaining clean and sanitary kennels.
Maintaining required MSDS log sheets.
Multitasking.
Communicating on radio frequencies.
Using office equipment, including personal computer, computer terminal, calculator, telephone, fax and copier.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City staff and the public.
Ability to:
Work under minimal supervision and in a team environment as required.
Learn external parasite recognition.
Monitor DOC inmates within required guidelines.
Frequently requires lifting and carrying materials weighing 40- 60 lbs. Additionally, may be required to handle dogs weighing up to 150 lbs.
Perform work that requires frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking, and standing on feet for long periods while performing job duties.
Other Qualifications
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required.
Valid Arizona Driver’s License.
Ability to obtain certification to perform animal euthanasia within 2 months of employment. Previous kennel experience desired.
Willing to work various shifts as assigned.
Must be able to pass Sierra Vista Police Department and Arizona Department of Corrections background check.
Must not have experimented with illegal substances within TWO (2) years of application.
- CIVILIAN MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Candidates must possess uncorrected hearing with no loss greater than 25db in the 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 hertz frequencies as measured by an audiometer.
- Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona.
- Candidates must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor criminal offense involving moral turpitude in Arizona, nor in any state or federal jurisdiction, where the commission of such a criminal offense would be a misdemeanor as defined by the Arizona Revised Statutes.
- Candidates must not have been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.
- Candidates must not have:
- used marijuana within the past two (2) years,
- All forms of marijuana, including THC extracts, cannabis, hashish, marijuana extracts, and marijuana edibles, and all forms of use will be treated the same. Sold, produced, cultivated, or transported marijuana for sale.
- Candidates must not have:
- used drugs other than marijuana within the past seven (7) years,
- used such drugs other than for experimentation; the use of drugs is presumed to be greater than experimentation if the use exceeds five (5) times total, or exceeds one (1) time since the age of 21 years,
- sold, produced, cultivated, or transported for sale any such drugs.
- Candidates must not have a pattern of abuse of prescription drugs.
- In addition to the minimum requirements (1-8), the successful candidate must meet the established requirements of each phase in the testing process to proceed to the next phase:
