ESL Instructor 

 

We are in search of an part time ESL Instructor who supports the school’s mission by preparing our adult immigrant students to become productive and civically engaged residents of Washington DC.  The instructor accomplishes this by providing excellent instruction that supports students’ diverse educational backgrounds, learning styles, and English language abilities.  The responsibilities of the position includes creating materials specific to the assigned level, selecting class textbooks, designing a class syllabus, and writing daily lesson plans to directly address all student needs.  The Instructor is expected to engage with multiple forms of data, both formal and informal, to help students advance academically.  Additionally, the role of the ESL Instructor requires the management of key data points.   Student tracking forms, daily attendance, student scores, and timecards are examples of the administrative responsibilities that extend beyond the time spent teaching in the classroom.


Essential Functions:

  • Assist students in acquiring the English language skills necessary to advance to the next ESL level
  • Provide life skill instruction that allows students to navigate important systems and resources in the metropolitan Washington, DC area
  • Implement classroom policies and procedures
  • Provide for different learning styles and abilities
  • Encourage students’ active participation and regular attendance
  • Monitor student progress through TEAAL and CASAS tests
  • Create course syllabus according to content-based Carlos Rosario Curriculum, TEAAL and CASAS pre-test scores and student goals
  • Prepare clear and concise daily lesson plans including objectives, available to supervisors
  • Create a positive learning environment for adult learners
  • Monitor and evaluates student performance and modifies instruction accordingly 
  • Model good English pronunciation

 

Secondary Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare lesson materials and instructional aids
  • Work with classroom paraeducator if applicable
  • Work with tutors if needed for student success
  • Co-plans with CALL Lab Instructor for technology skill development and e-portfolio completion
  • Keep daily attendance records current in the Student Information System
  • Fill out tracking forms and submit them in a timely manner
  • Develop and uses e-portfolio assessment to help document student progress.
  • Keep track of student goals related to academic progress and employment
  • Conduct student conferences at least twice during the semester (mid-semester and end-of-semester)
  • Attend faculty meetings and professional development

                        

Required Education:

Bachelor Degree in Education or two of the following: 

  • Teaching Certification; Master’s degree in Adult Education
  • Linguistics, TESOL, language studies, or a related field; 
  • A least three years of teaching experience.  

 

Qualifications

  • Experience in ESL and Adult Education preferred
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in both ESL preparation and Adult Education 
  • Must be flexible and able to make adaptations to meet the academic needs of students with different learning skills and challenges 
  • Work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills, be able to explain concepts to others effectively
  • Excellent organizational skills and timely completion of tasks
  • Fluently speak, read and write in English
  • Knowledge and experience using Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook
  • Demonstrate self-motivation, continual learning, and taking initiative.
  • Practice professional and effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Able to work independently or with others in a team approach

  • Must be able to provide proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination

Salary Ranges from $37.15 to $76.88 an hour based on experience.


Schedules Available:

Monday – Thursday: 5:30PM-9:00PM
