Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to provide veterinary care to sheltered or exotic animals. Develop policy and educate staff and public regarding animal health.
This class works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
• Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
• Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
• Develops, supervises, manages, and implements medical, surgical, and preventative health care programs, protocols and policies.
• Examines animals to diagnose and treat sickness, injury, or disease and inoculates against diseases.
• Performs surgery, administers medicines, or conducts routine health care procedures.
• Observes or examines animals directly in order to determine progress and need for further treatment.
• Educates staff, media, and the public regarding animal health, zoonoses, and public health.
• Conducts postmortem studies and analysis to determine the causes of animals’ deaths.
• Supervises and coordinates care, welfare and medicine research and other research programs.
• Reads scientific and medical literature to keep abreast of enhancements to veterinary medicine.
• Keeps accurate records of care administered to sick animals.
• Conducts general health screenings.
• Assists in budget preparation and monitors and controls expenditures.
LMAS
• Advises animal owners regarding sanitary measures, feeding, and general care necessary to promote health of animals.
• Counsels clients about the deaths of their pets or about euthanasia decisions for their pets.
• Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree.
• Two (2) years of veterinary experience, preferably in shelter medicine or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
• Must be on 24-hour call.
• Must work a varied schedule.
• Must possess and maintain DEA controlled substance registration or obtain within six months of employment.
• Must possess and maintain USDA veterinary accreditation or obtain within six months of employment.
• Must be eligible to sit for the Kentucky Veterinarian license as set forth by the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
• Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
