Who are we looking for?
We are seeking to hire a Senior Air Quality Specialist to join our expanding Canadian Operations at our Waterloo office. This role will be doing research, design, planning, and performing engineering duties in the prevention, control, and remediation of environmental hazards using various engineering disciplines. Work may include waste treatment, site remediation, or pollution control technology.

Responsibilities
- Field Work & Data Collection: Coordinate and implement field work to conduct noise measurements, air emission source inventories, and collect environmental data using preset tools, methods, and formats.
- Noise, Air Quality & Emission Analysis: Evaluate ambient background sound levels; conduct noise modeling using software such as CADNA/A, TNM, Stamina, STAMSON, INSUL, and EASE; perform air dispersion modeling using AERMOD, SCREEN3, and other atmospheric dispersion models.
- Engineering Solutions Design: Assist with the design and implementation of noise and vibration control measures such as silencers, barriers, wall treatments, and building component acoustic designs; support GHD's Advisory group with carbon reduction and climate change management plans in alignment with relevant agency and government requirements.
- Acoustic Reporting: Prepare Acoustic Assessment Reports, Acoustic Audits, and environmental reports to support compliance with regulatory requirements; prepare Emission Summary and Dispersion Modelling Reports for ECA applications and EASR registrations; develop reports for the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI).
- GHG Emissions & Climate Impact: Estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and/or verify greenhouse gas reports as part of environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives.
- Health, Safety, and Environment: Follow organizational HSE policies to identify and mitigate environmental and workplace risks; ensure safety compliance during field and project work.
- Technical Research & Development: Aid senior staff with technical research and recommend technical developments to improve processes, tools, and environmental solutions.
- Testing & Validation: Design feasibility tests, noise compliance checks, and technical assessments to validate proposed engineering solutions.
- Project Management & Client Support: Contribute to project delivery by working within established project management plans; interact with Project Managers and Accounting to gather the information required to prepare purchase orders for waste vendors; assist in managing client relationships and addressing technical inquiries.
- Mentorship: Work with GHD’s corporate Air & Noise Group, consisting of over 80 engineers and scientists across North America; oversee and train junior staff in field work, data analysis, and report preparation.
Education & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, or related discipline.
- Professional Credentials: Registered or eligible for Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or limited engineering license with Professional Engineers Ontario is an asset.
- Experience:
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in air quality work or environmental engineering.
- Experience in supervision or mentorship of junior staff (1 year preferred).
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience and understanding of any of the following regulations and associated guidance documents would be an asset: Ontario Regulation 419 Air Quality, NPRI Reporting Guideline, Air Dispersion Modelling Guideline, Greenhouse Gas Reporting Programs (provincial and federal).
- Proficiency in air quality modeling software (AERMOD, Screen3, etc.).
- Ability to prepare clear, client-focused proposals and technical reports.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to engage in technical discussions with clients and colleagues.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Willingness to travel and perform field work; ability to work at heights and in high-noise areas.
- Valid G driver’s license and access to a vehicle
