Position Summary:
As a Furniture Upholsterer, you will be responsible for transforming furniture pieces by reupholstering and restoring them. Your expertise in cutting, sewing, and upholstery techniques will contribute to creating high-quality, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable furniture pieces for our valued customers. This role requires precision, attention to detail, creativity, and a passion for craftsmanship.
Essential Functions Statement(s):
- Assess furniture pieces and determine the scope of work required for reupholstering, restoration, and repair.
- Remove old upholstery materials, including fabric, padding, and springs, ensuring careful dismantling of furniture pieces without causing damage.
- Repair or replace damaged or worn-out parts, such as webbing, foam, or frames, using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Measure and cut fabric, ensuring accurate dimensions and patterns to achieve desired aesthetics and fit.
- Seamlessly sew and attach fabric using various techniques, such as hand stitching, machine sewing, or upholstery fasteners.
- Add padding or foam to furniture pieces to enhance comfort and support.
- Create or restore decorative elements, such as tufting, buttoning, or trimmings, to add visual appeal to furniture.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring the proper storage and handling of tools, materials, and equipment.
- Stay updated on industry trends, new techniques, and materials, and implement them to enhance the quality of work.
- Collaborate with other team members, such as furniture designers, woodworkers, or finishers, to ensure a seamless workflow and successful completion of projects.
- Uphold quality standards, paying meticulous attention to detail, and delivering exceptional craftsmanship to meet or exceed customer expectations.
- Adhere to safety guidelines and maintain a safe working environment, using protective equipment and tools appropriately.
Education, Experience, & Certifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or equivalent training and experience.
- Must pass a background check. Proven experience as a Furniture Upholsterer or similar role, demonstrating a strong portfolio of completed upholstery projects.
- Proficiency in upholstery techniques, such as fabric cutting, sewing, pattern making, and furniture restoration.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent knowledge of fabrics, their properties, and their suitability for different furniture types.
- Skilled in using a variety of upholstery tools and equipment, including sewing machines, staple guns, scissors, hammers, and pliers.
- Ability to read and interpret furniture design plans or sketches, and translate them into finished upholstered products.
- Detail-oriented mindset, with the ability to maintain precision and accuracy throughout the upholstery process.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and address issues that may arise during upholstery or restoration.
- Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, collaborating effectively with other professionals.
- Strong time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift and move heavy furniture pieces when necessary.
- Good communication skills to interact with clients, designers, and team members.
- Ability to lift, pull, and manipulate heavy objects.
- Ability to stand, kneel, and walk for up to eight hours a day.
- Must be able to squat, lift, stretch, and bend in order to reach all areas of the facility.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.
