Frederick County Fire & Rescue is seeking a qualified Lieutenant Assistant Training Officer to help lead our training efforts with a focus on fire programs. In this vital leadership role, you'll coordinate and deliver high-quality training in fire suppression, EMS, hazardous materials, and specialized operations to ensure our teams are mission ready. Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday | 40 hours per week

*Overtime is required based on agency’s needs

Position Duties

Key Responsibilities

As a Lieutenant Assistant Training Officer, you will:

  • Coordinate, schedule, and facilitate training programs in fire suppression, EMS, and hazardous materials.
  • Instruct and evaluate fire and rescue personnel during County-sponsored training courses.
  • Assign and manage certified instructors and ensure quality assurance across training programs.
  • Prepare training advisories, documentation, and course reports.
  • Maintain training records and inventories of audiovisual and instructional materials.
  • Assist in planning and conducting local and regional “All-Hazards” exercises.
  • Support the development and revision of training curricula and policies.
  • Engage in public school outreach and Career Development Program initiatives.
  • Monitor compliance with training standards and contribute to division budget preparation.
  • Participate in emergency incidents as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

For Internal Applicants:

  • Must be a current lieutenant or specialist on the lieutenant’s list.
  • Current certifications: Virginia and/or National Registry Paramedic, Fire Instructor II, Virginia Office of EMS Education Coordinator, American Heart Association ACLS Instructor, EVOC I, II, & III.
  • Must obtain and maintain certifications including Train-The-Trainer within 12 months of promotion and all other minimum Lieutenant certifications.

For External Applicants:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Current certifications: Virginia EVOC III, Firefighter I & II, HazMat Awareness and Operations, Driver/Operator-Pumper, Fire Instructor I, Fire Officer I, CPR, Virginia EMT, and Virginia Office of EMS Education Coordinator.
  • Must obtain and maintain certifications including Train-The-Trainer within 12 months of hire and ancillary Instructor within 18 months of hire.
  • Preferred qualifications include Paramedic, ACLS Instructor, PALS Instructor, EVOC I, II, & III.
