A Brief Overview
A neonatal nurse practitioner is an advanced care nurse specializing in the care and treatment of newborn infants suffering from complex health issues, such as congenital abnormalities and prematurity. The NNP is accountable to provide team-oriented, primary-level patient management of critical and convalescent newborns. They apply independent judgment, communication, and collaboration with other health care members to manage and provide patient care activities for a group of patients and their significant others. They provide primary health care and emergency services to high-risk newborns and infants; and also obtain history; perform physical exams, interpret lab results, radiographic, and clinical data to assist in developing an individualized plan of care for each infant under the supervision of a physician. The NNP job description entails performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in adherence to protocols and policies consistent with the state board of nursing and agreed upon collaborative agreement. In addition, the practitioner has a liaison role between the medical and nursing staffs, the family unit, and ancillary health personnel to meet the special needs of the infant.

Skills and Abilities

  • All APRN incumbents are required to maintain Registered Nurse competencies as designated by Federal and State organizations and as outlined in SVH policy. (Required proficiency)


Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse - KSBN Must have valid APRN licensure. Be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners. Required or

  • Physician Assistant (PA) - KSBHA Required

  • Additional certification may be required in certain patient care settings or populations. The department director will provide specific information and the time frame in which such certification may be attained at the time of hire/transfer into department.


What you will do

  • Functions independently and collaboratively with the physician and all disciplines to provide continuity of health care services for individuals, families, and/or groups.

  • Assists with inpatient rounds, records and updates pertinent patient progress in charts. Participates in patient evaluation and care planning, reviews laboratory studies, vital signs, x-rays and electrocardiograms. Intervenes as determined appropriate, in collaboration with the Neonatologist and within management. protocols and standards.

  • Performs history and physicals, daily visits and discharge physicals in the NICU, if asked, with timely documentation. Provides patient education and discharge instructions.

  • Develops and implements an initial plan for differential diagnoses and management of presenting problems, discusses the identified problems and their management with the attending pediatrician.

  • Ensures that care delivered to patients is provided according to the Stormont Vail Health mission, strategic plans, and all internal/external regulations, policies and procedures. Practices within the Kansas Nurse Practice Act and within the guidelines of management protocols. Supports the established care models of Stormont Vail Health.

  • Institute emergency measures and emergency treatment or appropriate stabilization measures as necessary.

  • Assists or complete procedures as needed and within the NNP’s scope of practice.

  • Arrange inpatient admissions at the direction of the collaborating physician.

  • Provide instructions and guidance regarding health care and health care promotion to patients/family.

  • Continue to be involved in professional organizations and show process towards individual development. Attends and actively participates in meetings and in-services.

  • Facilitates supervising physician’s referral of patients to appropriate healthcare facilities, agencies, other resources in the community, or other physicians.

  • Communicates with families, institutions and other healthcare providers regarding patient’s treatment and status. Completes daily phone calls to Discharged patients for follow up or designates to a staff to complete.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or as judgment necessitates.
