Functional Responsibilities:
The Electro-Mechanical Engineer French speaking retainer will work as part of the Technical Services Unit peer review stream reviewing infrastructure design packages prepared in French. S/he will conduct reviews, act as the focal point occasionally for multidisciplinary reviews in conjunction with a network of specialist consultant (retainer) personnel. S/he will be familiar with UNOPS’s infrastructure review processes, codes typically used in Africa and an excellent communicator in French.
Specific tasks are outlined below:
- Technical and Quality Assurance
- Apply knowledge of relevant codes and good practice in analyzing packages of information to produce high quality reviews of proposed electro-mechanical works (drawings, calculations, specifications, bills of quantity)
- Clearly communicate review findings in writing, and verbally when required
- Conduct reviews with due regard for current innovations, passive design and energy efficiency imperatives, and pragmatic applications of maintenance in developing country setting, particularly rural or unsophisticated environments
- Liaising with other disciplines to harmonize overall reviews
- Review in a robust, and proportionate manner, exercising professional judgment to prioritize matters of life safety and functionality
- Any other duties assigned by the Technical Services Unit (TSU) peer review stream lead or the TSU Manager.
- Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
- Coordination of reviewers in the instance where s/he is appointed as the focal point for a review by the supervisor
- Identify specialist expertise that may be required
- Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure coherent reports
- Regular liaison with services engineers on topical matters, including in HQ and other review centres.
Education
- Technical/Professional Diploma in Electrical Engineering and/or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university is required.
- Bachelor of the Science in Electrical Engineering and/or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university is desired.
- Advanced degree in Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering from an accredited university is an added advantage.
- Full member status registration with a recognized professional built environment body is required.
- Minimum of 6 years’ experience in designing, preparing drawings, specifications, calculations and BOQs for electrical or mechanical systems is required.
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in infrastructure engineering design is required.
- Familiarity with electrical installations and infrastructure, Air conditioning and ventilation systems, Water supply and drainage systems, Firefighting systems, Lift installations, Solar installations and Gas distribution systems is an added advantage.
- Minimum one year’s experience in peer reviewing proposed electrical / mechanical installations in a developing context is desirable.
- Proficiency in the use of google suite is required
- Full working knowledge of English and French is required.
- Knowledge of another official UNOPS language is an asset.
