Position Summary
The Sr. Safety Manager is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and oversight of safety policies, procedures, and programs across the safety team, multiple divisions, and affiliated companies under the direction of the Safety Director. This exempt, salaried position involves strategic planning, cross-level communication, and significant decision-making authority. The Sr. Safety Manager leads the coordination and enforcement of safety initiatives and training, ensuring program effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and the protection of all employees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Sr. Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with company and regulatory safety standards while promoting a culture of safety across all operations.
Key duties include:
- Foster and maintain a culture of safety across all operations
- Ensure a safe work environment free from recognized hazards for all employees.
- Conduct regular site safety inspections of customer properties, facilities, and worksites, documenting findings and reporting results to management.
- Lead or assist with new-hire safety onboarding and orientation.
- Ensure employees are equipped with the necessary tools, equipment, and resources to perform duties safely.
- Provide First Aid and/or Basic Life Support when required.
- Oversee the timely reporting, investigation, and documentation of incidents and accidents in accordance with company protocols.
- Collect, analyze, and report safety data; prepare and present reports on trends, performance metrics, and corrective actions.
- Interpret and communicate company policies and regulatory requirements to employees on a consistent basis.
- Conduct periodic vehicle and driver safety audits to ensure fleet compliance.
- Administer and support safety programs, including but not limited to: Fall Protection, Hazard Communication, Substance Abuse, COVID-19 protocols, and Fleet Safety.
- Procure, distribute, and maintain safety equipment for assigned regions.
- Support disciplinary processes in collaboration with the Safety Director, Human Resources, and supervisors regarding safety non-compliance.
- Perform other duties and special assignments as directed by the Safety Director.
Requirements
Licenses & Certifications
- Minimum age: 18 years; with a valid Class C California Driver’s License.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction and/or General Industry Certification (required).
- OSHA 500/501 Trainer Certification (preferred).
- Additional certifications include, but are not limited to: (e.g., Train-the-Trainer for Forklifts, MEWPs, Swing stage / Suspended / Supported Scaffold, Respiratory Protection, Defensive Driving).
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required, college degree in Occupational Health & Safety or similar field preferred.
- 5–7 years of safety management experience in General Industry and/or General Construction setting, with emphasis in Janitorial, Property Maintenance, Landscaping / Landscape Construction, and Commercial Construction.
- Prior leadership experience with proven ability to manage programs, projects, and staff.
Skills, Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (required).
- Strong knowledge of federal, state (OSHA, Cal-OSHA) standards.
- Ability to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
- Ability to maintain integrity and confidentiality.
- Physical requirements: walking, standing, sitting, driving for extended periods; climbing stairs/ladders, and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
- Work environments include indoor office and outdoor site conditions with exposure to varying weather and noise levels.
- Ability to work nights/weekends as required.
- Have a willingness to travel up to 10%.
