Weiser Memorial Hospital--rated as one of Idaho's best places to work--is hiring a Unit Clerk for our Emergency Department (ED).  The ED Unit Clerk is a public-facing role with responsibility for indirect patient care in the ED setting. The Unit Clerk meets the communication needs of the patient, the patient's family, departmental staff, and medical staff. This role prepares and compiles medical records in the ED, initiates directions from physicians and nursing staff, and regularly participate in performance improvement activities. This role is also responsible for maintaining all regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies and procedures, and standards of excellence. The ED Unit Clerk is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, reporting to the ED Manager. 


The expected schedule is Monday, Tuesday, and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. - 11:30 p.m., with flexibility, as needed.

Responsibilities 

  • Registers patients to the Emergency Department. 
  • Reviews and updates patient information on each Emergency Department episode.
  • Prepares charts for scheduled admissions. Assembles chart packets with consents etc. to be scanned into the EMR. Documentation meets current standards and policies. 
  • Responsible for interviewing patients or their representative, where admission is unscheduled. Obtains personal information or verifies information already on file, including emergency numbers and insurance information. 
  • Assists with patient admissions, discharges and transfers. Responsible for obtaining signatures on Conditions of Admission and initiating the advance directive process. Communicates with Nursing Services when no advance directive is available. 
  • Notifies patients in the waiting areas if there are delays or will be a lengthy wait time. 
  • Verifies patient insurance is active with given tools/websites. 
  • Provides information to the patient/representative about billing, complaint process, patient rights, HIPAA and visiting hours. Distributes hospital specific literature.
  • Copies necessary paperwork and assists with patient transfers to other facilities. 
  • Scans face sheet to remote pharmacy when house pharmacist is not in house within 1 hour of admission. 
  • Logs all patients in the computer or in the logbook, if computer is down, upon admission, transfer, discharge or expiration.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. 
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to hospital supervisors, nurses, co-workers and physicians. 

Requirements

  • Current BLS Certification. 
  • Experience in healthcare, registration, or customer service preferred. 
  • Ability to use sound judgment and cope with potentially stressful situations 
  • Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with standards of performance improvement and organizational values (e.g., efficiency & financial responsibility, safety, partnership & service, teamwork, compassion, integrity, and trust & respect). 
  • Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with principles for service excellence. 
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages a plus. 
  • Basic computer knowledge. 
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
