Summary

School Bus Drivers transport students to and from school, field trips and athletics events  in a safe manner in accordance with the Transportation Department and the Salem Public Schools policies.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for inspecting vehicle for safety and complete pre and post inspection logs
• Observes students entering and existing school bus safely
• Assists monitor in securing young or physically challenged students’ seatbelts and wheelchairs
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as transportation plan, safety rules and procedure manuals
• Must adhere to assigned route while maintaining a strict timeline
• Transport students on scheduled field trips, ensuring safe and timely travel to and from designated destinations.
• Operate athletic charter routes for school sports teams, including evenings
• Communicates with parents and school staff in a professional and courteous manner
• Maintains discipline of students on school bus (i.e. keeps students from leaning out windows, staying in seat, respecting other riders, and using appropriate language) and submits written reports to the transportation department after any incidents on the bus.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
• Performs other related tasks as may be assigned by the Transportation Office

Qualifications

• Must possess CDL Driver’s License Class B
• School Bus Driver’s Certificate Required 
• Must possess necessary knowledge to be able to identify vehicle components to complete safety inspections
• Must be able to complete safety and driving instruction per year as required by law
