This position works part-time as a Program Specialist - Library Shelver on an "on-call" basis, working up to 19 1/2 hrs per week including weekends (hours may vary week to week), without benefits.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting for candidates over 18 years old.
Under general supervision, performs basic filing of library books and materials and related manual work in support of library services; assignments may be in the City's main library or in branch libraries in outlying areas; performs related work as assigned.
Position Duties
Minimum Qualifications
- Discharges library materials using a computer.
- Retrieves library materials from return desk or other deposit areas for re-filing.
- Sorts and shelves books and other library materials.
- Reviews shelves for correct filing, makes necessary filing corrections and moves books and other materials as space needs require.
- Spot checks books and materials for needed repair, identifies worn or damaged items for withdrawal/replacement decisions.
- Lifts and transports boxes and other library materials and gathers and delivers books for transport from one library area to another.
- Refers patrons to appropriate library staff for assistance.
- Assists in a variety of assigned special projects and services.
Other Qualifications
- Basic computer skills;
- Basic public library services principles and practices;
- Basic principles and uses of business English; and
- Basic filing practices and procedures.
- Following oral and written directions;
- Sorting, shelving and maintaining books and other library materials accurately and neatly;
- Dealing tactfully and effectively with those contacted in the course of the work;
- Learning library and related filing systems, such as the Dewey Decimal System; and
- Learning basic computer operations.
