We are Arcadia Science, an evolutionary biology company founded and led by scientists. Our mission is to turn natural innovations into real-world solutions by developing systematic, and quantitative approaches to leveraging biology for therapeutics R&D. We share our research as openly as possible to accelerate discovery and engage with the broader scientific community.
The Opportunity:
We are looking for a full-stack software engineer who loves building user-friendly software products for scientists. To accelerate Arcadia’s goal of building end-to-end research workflows, we are developing web applications and data infrastructure to close the gap between our wet lab and computational scientists.
Our ideal candidate for this role has strong software development skills, experience building software from 0 → 1 in a fast-paced environment, and a natural engineering mindset. Top candidates will have a strong software engineering background, excellent product design skills, and fluency with modern web development frameworks and cloud technologies.
This role is a great fit for engineers interested in breaking into biotechnology and therapeutics – no direct experience in the life sciences is required. To ensure a dynamic environment for interactions and learning across multi-disciplinary teams, this role is onsite at our headquarters in Emeryville.
Given our goal of making our tools as widely available as possible, open source software experience is a big plus. You can learn more about our approach to computing at Arcadia here and check our existing projects on GitHub.
Responsibilities
Work onsite at Arcadia’s HQ alongside researchers and engineers to build applications, infrastructure, and tools for biological research workflows.
Work closely with the product team to ensure the product is user-friendly and meets the needs of scientist users through rapid iteration cycles.
Architect, develop, and maintain our internal product suite using standard web technologies to be scalable, performant and delightful to use.
Provide ongoing support and maintenance for the product, including bug fixes and feature enhancements.
Leverage computational biology, machine learning, and bioinformatics skills to enhance the data exploration capabilities of the product.
Education/Experience
BA/BS in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field
Extensive experience (4-6 years) in building production-level software for data exploration and visualization
Proficiency with TypeScript and Python
Proficiency with backend frameworks and libraries, including FastAPI, SQLModel, Pydantic, and Polars
Proficiency with web development frameworks and libraries, including React, Next.js, Astro, TanStack, and Tailwind CSS
Proficiency with PostgreSQL databases, and experience with handling migrations
Experience with developing full-stack AI-powered applications using frameworks such as the Vercel AI SDK or similar is a big plus, but not required
Track record of taking new projects from idea to high quality technical product with a focus on delightful end-user experiences; previous startup experience a plus
Experience with software engineering practices (version control, CI/CD pipelines etc.)
Is highly adaptable and able to start and stop various projects as well as pivot with the organization as it grows
Ability to move fast in an environment where things are sometimes loosely defined
Interest in / understanding of evolutionary and molecular biology (direct experience not required)
The expected salary range is $150,000-$225,000 per year with generous equity and benefits, depending on experience level.
The position will require the individual to be on-site at our Emeryville, California headquarters.
