POSITION SUMMARY:
- Responsible for the onsite operations of arenas, parks, park facilities, beaches, public washrooms, playgrounds, sports fields, flowerbeds, etc. within the Municipality of Central Elgin.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- May be appointed as an acting Lead Hand of a crew, based on the schedule and at the discretion of the Superintendent.
- Maintains the arena ice surface in good useable condition with a regular program of cleaning, re-surfacing and ice maintenance.
- Maintains the recreation buildings in clean, safe and attractive condition - perform cleaning and minor repairs to all recreation facilities.
- Performs maintenance and beatification duties on municipal properties (i.e. Port Stanley Beach, Port Stanley and Belmont downtown, parks).
- Set up Green House for spring planting.
- Receives rental payments from users of recreation facilities and assists with the booking of these facilities.
- Collects money for Ice Programming such as Public Skating and regular programming.
- Ensure nightly deposits and receipts are issued when necessary.
- Supervises the proper use of the facilities, maintains safety and security; makes certain that lights and heaters are off and the buildings are locked after use.
- Makes certain that emergency evacuation is followed in the event of fire, chemical leak or other emergencies.
- Set up and tear down of events throughout recreational facilities and ensure that users are accommodated and that requested equipment, and furniture is provided.
- Maintains crowd control of hockey games, concerts, and social events; calls police if rowdy and violent behaviour erupts.
- Maintains accessibility to users during events; provides assistance when required.
- Follows all health and safety practices and procedures. Reports unsafe conditions or work to supervisor.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- One to two years of experience preferred.
- One year team leader or leadership experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Horticulture Technician Diploma, considered an asset.
- Certified ice technician designation through the ORFA considered an asset.
- Knowledge of maintenance, equipment, refrigeration, and ice-making tools.
- Appropriate knowledge of basic landscape design and horticulture maintenance.
- G2 driver’s license.
- Must have a history of good attendance and reliability.
- Follows all safety rules and maintains a strong safety record.
- Completes work to meet the required quality standards.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Must be able to read and write and keep accurate records, understand and be able to respond to both verbal and written instructions.
- Works effectively both independently and as part of a team, able to accept direction and complete tasks with limited supervision.
- Responsible for effectively communicating with team members, supervisors, and the public, using oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Interact with the public and coworkers in a professional and respectful manner, using good judgment and staying calm in stressful situations.
PHYSICAL SKILL AND EFFORT REQUIREMENTS
- The ability to walk or stand for long periods of time.
- Lifting, carrying, or moving heavy objects (typically 25–50 lbs or more).
- Climbing, bending, or kneeling frequently.
- Tolerating outdoor conditions and varying weather such as but not limited to snow, rain, heat, smog, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Primarily outdoor work. Exposure to varying weather conditions and rugged terrain.
- Will be required to work varied hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This position may be required to work in Belmont, Port Stanley and other Central Elgin locations.
