We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Research Assistant to assist with collection, collation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting of environmental and biodiversity data across the Urban Living Laboratory.  If you are passionate about the environment, enjoy working collaboratively, and are looking to build your research experience, we’d love to hear from you!

About the Centre

The Australian Harmony Centre for Ecosystem Futures is a unique partnership between Macquarie University and the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance.  The Centre was launched in November 2024 and aims to brings together researchers with the local community and businesses, students, Indigenous groups, industry and government to develop, test and showcase wholistic solutions for both nature and human health and wellbeing. Integrating research and innovation that incorporates Indigenous partnerships and perspectives, the Centre is working to find novel solutions for repairing biodiversity, adapting to climate change and supporting local communities.

The Centre’s current projects are embedded within a unique Urban Living Laboratory that aims to enhance nature within the social and built environment of a city. The Urban Living Lab is centred on the Wallumattagal campus at Macquarie University, with connections to the adjacent Lane Cove National Park, surrounding green network and waterways and the Macquarie Park Innovation District.

About the role

This is a 12-month part-time (0.6FTE) position.  You will be based in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. You will be working with researchers and organisational units across the University to collate and manage biodiversity and environmental data, to assist with fieldwork collection of biodiversity and environmental data, and to contribute to the Centre’s outreach and engagement activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with researchers and organisational units such as Macquarie Univerty’s Property Services to collate and manage environmental and biodiversity data

  • Development of data management and reporting processes

  • Assist in data collection and fieldwork activities within the Urban Living Laboratory

  • Undertake outreach, engagement and communication activities for the Centre.

  • Supporting other research and administrative tasks as required.

Selection Criteria:

  • Degree in environmental sciences, conservation and biodiversity, ecology or equivalent

  • Capacity to undertake environmental fieldwork

  • Environmental data management and GIS experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience in plant identification

  • Interest in working with local communities, including Dharug community
