Job Description
Nevada State University invites applications for a Student Worker - Embedded Peer Leader (EPL) for the Academic Success Center (ASC). The mission of the ASC is to provide academic guidance through FREE peer-to-peer support via tutoring, embedded course support, and study/test-taking strategies for a variety of subject areas.
The Embedded Course Support Program is a robust academic support program grounded in the International Supplemental Instruction (SI) Model. The program supports challenging courses with high enrollment and low pass rates or those that serve as required pathways for specific majors or graduation requirements, such as foundational Math or Science courses.
Embedded Peer Leaders (previously known as “SI Leaders” and “Course Assistants”) will regularly attend course lectures, facilitate weekly structured group study sessions, and offer individual tutoring/mentoring sessions. The EPL will also provide guidance on navigating college successfully, such as developing effective course-learning strategies, fostering a sense of belonging, and connecting students with campus resources.
All embedded peer leaders must participate in pre-semester and ongoing training related to best practices for academic support/learning theory, facilitating collaborative learning, mentoring, and teamwork.

Core Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate reliability, a positive work ethic, effective communication, and the ability to apply/receive constructive feedback.
- Attend assigned course lecture daily/weekly to review class content and model positive student habits and campus engagement with students in the course.
- Prepare for and facilitate weekly structured group study sessions.
- Hold additional office hours and/or mentoring/tutoring sessions at the ASC based on embedded service needs.
- Coordinate with course faculty, program staff, and peers in a team setting to improve student outcomes.
- Advocate for the interest, needs, and rights for students in courses.
- Document student interactions and attendance through tracking software.
- Support students in transitioning to Nevada State University and/or the assigned course in order to become academically successful.
- Participate in pre-semester training, ongoing training, and staff meetings (biweekly and monthly meetings).
- May be asked to assist with front desk coverage and customer service (greeting students, answering phones, scheduling appointments, student referrals, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned B+ or higher in one of the targeted courses/subjects or comparable course.
- Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA or maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in the most 2 recent semesters.
- Enrolled in at least 6 credits at Nevada State for the semester in which you hold the position.
- Provide a faculty recommendation for the course you are applying to serve as an EPL.
- Must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current or upcoming semester at Nevada State.
- Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications:
- Complete at least 1 year (2 semesters) at Nevada State by Fall 2025.
- Ability to present oneself professionally and interact with others in a courteous and respectful manner.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, learn, and apply procedures and regulations.
- Ability to work and manage multiple duties, projects, and assignments while meeting established deadlines.
- Ability to work in a high-paced, noisy environment.
Work Hours:
This position will work 16-18 hours per week; work schedule to be arranged based on the assigned course. Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week.
Hourly Rate:
$16.00 per hour.
