The opportunity
We are seeking a Lead Database Administrator for Lingo based in Alameda, CA (San Francisco Bay Area), our product headquarters.
The Lead Database Administrator is responsible for designing, managing, optimizing, and maintaining Cassandra and Postgres SQL database infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in database administration, particularly with Apache Cassandra and Postgres SQL. They will ensure the performance, availability, and security of our database systems. This role requires a proactive individual who can troubleshoot issues, implement best practices, and collaborate with development and operations teams to support business-critical applications.
What you'll work on:
- Design and Architecture: Create comprehensive database designs that align with business requirements and technical specifications.
- Review, validate and enhance logical database designs.
- Define and implement physical databases.
- Perform database administration activities (e.g., modifications, enhancements, expansions).
- Oversee the deployment of database solutions, ensuring effective integration with existing systems.
- Install, configure, and maintain Apache Cassandra clusters.
- Optimize Cassandra configurations for high availability and scalability.
- Monitor and tune database performance, including read/write operations, compaction, and garbage collection.
- Implement and maintain monitoring tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog) to track database health and performance.
- Work closely with development teams to design and implement efficient database schemas and queries.
- Provide 24/7 support for production databases and resolve issues promptly.
- Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams to ensure seamless integration of Cassandra with other systems.
- Maintain thorough documentation of database designs, configurations, and processes for future reference and compliance.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and trends in database management to recommend improvements and innovations.
- Develop strategies for implementing new technologies.
- Evaluate and recommend new database software, utilities, and tools.
- Collaborate daily with internal clients and technical support peers on divisional and enterprise-wide projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 8 years of experience as a DBA in the design, testing, implementation, and administration of management systems databases.
- Technical training including Database Administration, Performance and Tuning, and Backup and Recovery.
- Minimum 4 years hands-on experience with Cassandra cluster management, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of SQL Server, MySQL, NoSQL databases.
- Proficient in SQL, CQL, and database languages.
- Experience with Linux/Unix, shell scripting, and monitoring tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana).
- Familiar with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Knowledge of monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or Kibana.
- Expertise in data modeling and performance tuning.
- Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical collaboration.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in Apache Cassandra or related technologies.
Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools (e.g., Terraform).
Experience with Druid and spark

The base pay for this position is
$128,000.00 – $256,000.00In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
