The Opportunity
The R&D Engineer's primary responsibilities include developing and testing portable instrumentation deployed in remote settings, and building laboratory automation tools to support Biohub SF's topline goals and collaborations with Biohub SF investigators. Additionally, they will play a key role in supporting remote deployments, managing data, as well as relationships with clinical partners abroad.
The R&D Engineer will report directly to the Senior Staff R&D Engineer, in the Bioengineering Platform at CZ Biohub, San Francisco.
You will
- Use broad expertise to develop hardware and/or software systems with only high level guidance
- Independently generate solutions to engineering problems, and participate in team-based efforts to solve complex problems
- Participate in the project planning process
- Participate in discussions with project collaborators
- Conduct experiments, tests, and data analyses without direct guidance
- Perform preparation and handling of biological specimens in the wet lab
- Adapt to rapidly-evolving hardware, software, and experimental protocols
- Document all work and experimental results with diligence and accuracy
- Write scientific publications and patent applications
You have
Essential –
- PhD Degree in Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent post-BS work experience.
- BS degree holders require >=6 years of relevant, post-graduate hands-on engineering experience.
- MS degree holders require >=4 years of relevant, post-graduate hands-on engineering experience.
Demonstrated track record of hands-on hardware project experience:
- Basic machine shop proficiency (drilling, milling, lathing, etc.)
- Proficiency in CAD (ex. OnShape, Solidworks)
- Familiarity with electronics and PCB design
- Proficiency in Python
- Basic proficiency in the wet lab is desired, but can also be learned on the job
- Soldering, PCB assembly, and electronics test and measurement skills (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, etc)
Nice to have -
- Expertise in other programming languages (C++, Java, Matlab)
- Knowledge of optics/microscopes
Compensation
The San Francisco, CA base pay range for this role is R&D Engineer I = $92,000.00 - $126,500.00, and R&D Engineer II = $108,000.00 - $138,000.00. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process.
