JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Director of Surgical Services, the Pre-Admission Testing Registered Nurse (PAT RN) performs an age specific plan of care for a designated group of patients using the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. Collaborates with physicians and other health team members in coordinating and implementing procedures and surgeries. Uses leadership skills/clinical judgment in coordinating patient care and directing/delegating activities of the patient care unit team.  It is a fast-paced environment requiring the art of customer service, efficiency, and team work to safely prepare patients of all ages for surgery. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Interviews patient and/or significant other determining physical status, medical history, and psychosocial needs relative to patient's procedure. Identifies patient's knowledge deficits, anticipates patient's needs and potential complications.

Communicates and receives pertinent assessment data with appropriate health care team members. 

Obtains, places and transcribes patient orders electronically for pre-procedure testing, as well as day of service orders. Clarifies and arranges testing to be completed for patient as required; coordinates with physician offices, clinics, etc. Monitors and reviews results of pre-procedure testing, including notifying physicians of abnormal test results.

Retrieves and reviews testing results. Notifies physician of medications ordered that conflict with allergies or other prescription medication patient is taking. Reviews and coordinates future activities based on test results. Requests additional testing/referrals from physicians based on patient history.

Ensures all regulatory requirements (history & physical, informed consent, correct procedure/site) are completed and current.

Attests patient is fully prepared for upcoming procedure and educates patient regarding time of check in, duration of procedure, and answers their questions. Instructs patient regarding diet/fluid intake and medications to continue/stop taking prior to procedure. Provides clear, explicit instructions for patient and family to follow to ensure a successful procedure.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience

  • Current, valid, unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse license is required.
  • BSN or current enrollment in a BSN program is preferred.
  • 2+ years RN experience required.
  • AHA Basic Life Support BLS is required; ACLS is preferred.
  • CNOR certification is preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient computer skill including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to work with people in close situations, using excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization ability.
  • Multitasking and time management is critical to successful performance in this role.
  • Understands medical terminology and hospital department workflows.

The typical noise level for the work environment is: very quiet to moderate noise.

 

Hearing requirements: ability to hear alarms on equipment, patient call and instructions.
