About the Department

Under the direction of the Program Site Supervisor, the Program Aide plays a vital role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the City’s S.T.A.R.S. Expanded Learning Program. This position works directly on local elementary and middle school campuses, primarily focusing on managing student check-in and check-out procedures and providing excellent customer service to families and staff. The Program Aide also assists with site maintenance to ensure a clean and welcoming environment.

Under the direction of the Program Site Supervisor, the Program Aide plays a vital role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the City’s S.T.A.R.S. Expanded Learning Program. This position works directly on local elementary and middle school campuses, primarily focusing on managing student check-in and check-out procedures and providing excellent customer service to families and staff. The Program Aide also assists with site maintenance to ensure a clean and welcoming environment.

This position offers a flexible schedule, with work schedules typically between 10:45AM – 6:15PM (varies on location and program needs), Monday through Friday, during the academic year. The position may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and academic breaks for trainings and other duties as assigned. 

Employees in this position average 23 hours per week during the academic year, with a maximum of 950 hours.

Position Duties

The typical duties of this position include:
  • Promoting the safety of students and staff;
  • Monitoring student attendance;
  • Assisting with student sign-in/sign-out procedures and daily documentation;
  • Operating a computerized registration system;
  • Answering phones and assisting with program communication;
  • Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants;
  • Supporting behavior management strategies and reinforcing program expectations;
  • Providing excellent customer service to families, students, and staff;
  • Supporting activity prep, setup, and cleanup;
  • Reporting incidents, facility concerns, and low supplies to site leadership;
  • Assisting with distribution of snacks in accordance with program guidelines;
  • Helping with seasonal decorating and special event setup;
  • Assisting with the cleanliness and organization of program areas;
  • Serving as a positive role model for participants;
  • Communicating effectively both orally and in writing; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience working with youth in a group or educational setting is preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including afternoons, evenings, and occasional weekends or holidays.
  • Must be willing to work at least one (1) City Festival annually.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Positive attitude, strong communication skills, and commitment to teamwork.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must possess a High School diploma or equivalent. 
    • College level training is desirable.
    • Incumbent employees are expected to avail themselves of staff development as provided by the City.
  • Prior paid job-related experience successfully working with students in a learning situation is highly desirable.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must successfully clear the City's onboarding process, which includes DOJ Live Scan fingerprinting, reference checks, drug and alcohol screening, TB test, and assessment (reading comprehension, math fluency, and supervision testing). 
  • Must attend paid trainings, which include First-Aid/CPR/AED certification, Mandated Reporter Training, and other trainings as required by the City.
WORKING CONDITIONS:  
Performance of assigned duties and responsibilities may include prolonged standing, sitting, walking on level or unleveled surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, pushing, pulling, carrying, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more.
