About the Department

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Marketing & Special Events Manager, the Recreation & Programming Coordinator assists in developing and implementing programming and special events at Dorchester County Parks and Recreation sites and facilities. This includes planning, scheduling, and attending County-sponsored public events, external public events, and collaborative events with other County departments, as well as handling related tasks. 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assists the Marketing & Special Events Manager with the planning, organizing and implementation of Dorchester County Park programs, events and ceremonies. 

Plan, develop, organize and conduct a comprehensive and creative program of community recreation activities for diverse groups of people. 

Helps hire, train and supervise part time staff assisting with programs and events.  

Monitor and control wages and other costs. Implement new revenue-generating ideas and optimize current budget operations for cost efficiency. 

Conducts attendance/revenue data collection and analysis for program and event forecasting. 

Acts as a representative of the County, interacting and communicating with patrons to provide information about park events and programming being offered.  

Provide outstanding customer service, be an enthusiastic professional, and be able to build relationships with internal and external customers. 

Assists the Marketing & Special Events Manager in promoting programs and events.  

Works closely with park management for programs and special park events to ensure facilities are set-up and cleared in a timely manner. 

Work special events and activities with community partners, friend groups, and park volunteers as needed. 

Provide or assign care in emergencies, utilizing CPR/First Aid and bloodborne pathogen training. Notify appropriate public safety authorities when necessary. 

Operates a personal computer and other general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Power Point, Excel, Access, Teams, etc.) and other software. 

Complete, submit, and maintain oral and written records, including training reports, inventory logs, timesheets, inspections, and incident records. 

Complies with County policies and Parks Department regulations and procedures. 

Represent the department at internal and external meetings, industry-related training sessions, conferences, trade shows, schools, and community events. Visit similar facilities to enhance knowledge, productivity, and efficiency. 

Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education and Experience: 

Requires  Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation or closely related field 

and 

three (3) years related experience in programming/special events with some supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Other Qualifications

Special Qualifications: 

Must possess a valid state driver’s license. 

Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification is preferred or must be obtained within six months of employment. 

First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is preferred or must be obtained within six months of employment.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time position; typical work hours and days are Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:00am to 4:00pm and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full-time status. Nights and rotating weekends are also required as needed for Dorchester County sponsored events. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays and during emergencies or as requested.
