The Water Quality Treatment Technologies section in the Applied Sciences Bureau is seeking to fill a Senior Scientist position (may be filled as Scientist IV) position with advanced technical expertise in environmental data science, water quality, and hydrology to join our amazing team.

This is a mid to senior-level scientist position to support efforts in the monitoring, management and optimization of the District’s Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs), which are shallow created wetlands. The Everglades STAs are a critical component of the overall Everglades Restoration program and regulatory permits require achievement of very low phosphorus concentration at the STA discharge.

This position performs a variety of duties that includes a combination of field work, data management, data analysis, scientific writing, and technical presentations.  Field work includes conducting surveys and monitoring in the STAs of water, vegetation, soils, in addition to other wetland components as needed. Surveys and monitoring work will be conducted following established protocols and procedures. The incumbent would be working with various interdisciplinary teams.

Applicants should have experience demonstrating measurable career progression related to wetlands ecosystems, nutrient cycling, and applied science research. Experience in experimental design, data analysis, and data interpretation is required. Also required are demonstrable skills in technical writing, delivering scientific presentations, working in remote wetland environments, and good teamwork. Knowledge of South Florida wetland ecosystems is required.  Familiarity with geospatial software, data management, and analytics is required. Experience with the District’s Nutrient Load Program, DBHydro Insights and creating dashboards is highly desirable. Contributing data and technical writing to the District’s annual South Florida Environmental Report is required for this position.

The incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to plan and self-manage heavy workloads with changing priorities, enthusiasm, ability to handle harsh field conditions, and a willingness and commitment to actively contribute to collaborative scientific research and monitoring efforts.

Employment Guidelines:
This position may be filled as Scientist IV.

Senior Scientist:  Master's Degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and 6+ years of experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives.

Scientist 4:  Bachelor's Degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and 4+ years of experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives.
Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Licenses/Certifications:
Valid State of Florida Driver's License required.

Ability to operate airboats is preferred.

Physical Requirements/ Working Environment:
The work environment is a combination of field work and office work with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavily vegetated areas, with exposure to stinging/biting insects, snakes, and alligators. 

May be required to lift up to 40 lbs.

Additional physical abilities include agility, balancing, basic water skills and ability to swim, driving vehicles, kneeling, moving/transporting equipment on airboats, walking through rough terrain, working in, on, or near water are preferred.

Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
