Job Description
The incumbent will be responsible for compiling and analyzing large datasets in Microsoft Excel and summarizing current estuarine ecological conditions in reports and presentations weekly. The incumbent will also be responsible for participating in field and laboratory activities for the CES research monitoring program, which includes sampling water quality, benthic habitats and fish; sample processing; purchasing and maintaining necessary supplies; and maintaining boat and vehicles. The candidate must have experience operating, maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting sample instruments; applied knowledge of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for collecting water quality and ecological data; and ability to trailer, operate and work from outboard motorboats (15 to 24 ft).
Additional responsibilities include data management, data quality assurance/quality control, and general statistical analysis techniques that may be applied for production of technical reports and presentations. Candidates with experience in coding (using Python or R) and creating maps and data visualizations using ArcGIS Pro are especially desired.
Must possess effective organizational and communication skills, as well as demonstrable technical reading and writing skills. Familiarity with dominant macrofauna, macroalgae, and seagrass species of South Florida is preferred.
This position may be filled as a Scientist 2 based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Education/Experience Guidelines:
Scientist 3: Bachelor's Degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and 2+ years of qualifying experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within a scientific discipline that can be applied to support District goals and objectives. Master’s Degree preferred.
Scientist 2: Bachelor’s Degree in Natural or Physical Science and 1+ years of experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within a scientific discipline that can be applied to support District goals and objectives.
Licenses:
A valid State of Florida Driver’s License is required.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
Ability to work in estuarine environments in South Florida. The candidate must be able to swim and snorkel in coastal and estuarine environments. Must be able to lift field equipment (up to 30lbs). Must have prior experience trailering and operating small boats (15-24 ft.). Must complete required boating safety course at start of employment.
Due to the District’s response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
