About the Team

PPL’s Licensing team licenses the use of recorded music on radio, television, and on some online uses, as well as in background music services and jukeboxes in the UK. PPL’s licensees include the likes of the BBC, ITV, and Sky, as well as radio stations owned by Global and Bauer. PPL distributes the income received from these licences to its members who include record companies and artists.

This department develops PPL’s tariffs and licence agreements to ensure that they are fit for purpose in a world where the use of music is constantly changing, whilst also striking a balance between a fair return for our members and a fair fee for licensees.

  • Ensuring licensees’ compliance with the conditions and requirements of their licences and through coordination with other PPL departments and external suppliers, undertaking corrective action and/or auditing licensee’s revenues to ensure reporting provided to PPL is correct, where necessary.
  • Support the Licensing team in managing their relationship with PPL’s Finance department, ensuring effective invoicing and debt collection in line with agreed targets.
  • Build strong working relationships with licensees, their representatives and relevant trade bodies and represent PPL at industry events on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Develop and negotiate custom agreements and settlements with low to mid-level licensees, under guidance from the Licensing Manager and/or Licensing senior management.
  • Compile research and analysis to support the development of licence proposals and licensing strategy, ensuring that any analysis is thorough, logical and clearly presented.
