Role Summary

As a Senior Manager, Application Engineering, you will play a pivotal leadership role in shaping and delivering Vanguard's next-generation mobile and digital experiences. You will lead multiple engineering teams responsible for designing, developing, and operating enterprise-grade mobile platforms across iOS, Android, React Native, and supporting backend services.This role combines people leadership, engineering execution, architecture oversight, and stakeholder engagement to drive scalable, secure, and high-performing technology solutions. You will partner closely with product, design, and technology leaders to deliver innovative mobile experiences while fostering a strong engineering culture focused on excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilites

Lead and Scale Engineering Teams

• Lead multiple mobile engineering teams across iOS, Android, React Native, and Node-based backend-for-frontend (BFF) platforms.

• Hire, develop, and retain high-performing engineering talent while establishing clear performance expectations and growth opportunities.

• Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

• Coach engineering managers and senior engineers to strengthen leadership capability across the organisation.

• Drive employee engagement and support career development through mentoring and feedback.

Drive Delivery and Execution

• Ensure reliable, high-quality delivery of mobile products and platform capabilities at scale.

• Oversee planning, prioritisation, execution, and delivery across multiple initiatives and teams.

• Partner closely with Product, Design, Architecture, and Engineering leaders to align roadmaps and business outcomes.

• Establish, monitor, and improve engineering delivery metrics, quality standards, and operational KPIs.

• Effectively manage dependencies, risks, and competing priorities across programmes and teams.

Provide Technical and Architectural Leadership

• Set direction for mobile architecture, engineering standards, and platform strategy.

• Review and approve key technical decisions to ensure scalability, maintainability, security, and performance.

• Drive adoption of modern development practices, automation, testing strategies, and engineering tools.

• Anticipate, assess, and mitigate technical risks across multiple products and platforms.

• Guide teams in applying architecture patterns and engineering best practices to complex business challenges.

Operate and Improve Platforms

• Ensure production stability, resilience, reliability, and operational excellence across mobile applications.

• Lead root cause analysis activities and drive systemic improvements following incidents or outages.

• Promote engineering practices that improve software quality, reduce defects, and accelerate delivery.

• Continuously evaluate opportunities to improve platform efficiency, developer productivity, and time-to-market.

Stakeholder Engagement and Influence

• Communicate clearly and effectively with senior stakeholders regarding priorities, progress, risks, and strategic initiatives.

• Influence cross-functional decisions and build alignment across business and technology teams.

• Translate business objectives into technical strategies, execution plans, and measurable outcomes.

• Establish trusted partnerships across global teams and leadership groups.

Build for the Future

• Contribute to Vanguard's long-term mobile and digital platform strategy.

• Identify opportunities to improve platform reuse, engineering efficiency, and customer experience.

• Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and innovation opportunities.

• Evaluate and drive adoption of new capabilities supporting mobile modernisation and future growth.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of experience in software engineering, including significant experience in mobile application development.

• At least 5 years of experience leading engineering teams, including managing managers or multiple engineering teams.

• Proven track record delivering large-scale mobile applications and digital platforms.

• Strong experience leading engineering organisations across iOS, Android, and/or React Native ecosystems.

• Demonstrated success leading complex initiatives involving multiple stakeholders and cross-functional teams.

• Deep understanding of software architecture, platform engineering, and modern software development practices.

• Strong communication, collaboration, and influencing skills with experience engaging senior leaders.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field required.

• Advanced degree preferred.
