POSITION DESCRIPTION

St. Catherine's School is an Episcopal day school in Richmond, Virginia, founded in 1890 enrolling roughly 950 girls ages 3 through grade 12.  Located on a 16-acre campus in the western part of the city, St. Catherine's core values include pursuing academic excellence, developing character, nurturing spiritual growth, celebrating individuals, and building community.

POSITION OVERVIEW

St. Catherine’s School seeks a committed, enthusiastic, and innovative Middle School Art teacher to begin work for the 2026-2027 school term. The ideal candidate will create a flexible program and a class environment designed to cultivate each student’s learning and personal growth through art. The St. Catherine’s Art department aims to help develop a practical and theoretical understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Students will develop aesthetic appreciation, artistic perception, imagination, independent thought, and critical thinking through challenging problem-solving.

Supervisor: Head of Middle School

Supervisory Responsibilities:  N/A

Position Status:  Salaried, exempt, full-time, regular, 9-month schedule

Hours of Work:  Standard work week.  Occasional evening chaperoning and travel supervision as needed.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific duties of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching and applying elements of art and principles of art and design
  • Teaching the fundamentals and different approaches to various mixed media techniques
  • Providing clear feedback on the development and progress of student work 
  • Working with and assisting members of the art department with exhibitions and promoting the St. Catherine's visual art program
  • Maintaining proper care of all work areas, as well as art materials and supplies
  • Developing personal and professional short and long-term goals in partnership with the Head of Middle School and Department Chair
  • Participating in curriculum development, design, and implementation as required
  • Oversee Middle School Art budget
  • Serve as a Middle School advisor
  • Work collaboratively and align curriculum goals with colleagues in the department
  • Attend faculty meetings, all-school meetings, and department meetings as required
  • Serve on committees when requested
  • Find joy in working with students and the wider School community, both in teaching and taking part in the broader life of the School
  • Implement and uphold the School’s access, equity, and belonging initiatives

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to grasp, handle and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out; and smell. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Ability to become CPR and First Aid Certified.

TRAVEL

Occasional overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required for special events.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art Education (Master’s preferred)
  • Experience in and passion for teaching Art at the Middle School level
  • A strong foundation in studio art, art history, and different art genres and cultures in order to teach a range of art styles
  • Demonstrates creative and energetic teaching
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Articulate current trends in Art education with a proven history of implementation of these trends
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Proficiency in the latest and most relevant educational technologies
  • Uphold the high standards of the School’s established program

PREFERRED

  • Interest in extra-curricular activities such as theater, athletics, etc.
