Location: On-site – El Paso, TX

  • Bachelor's Electrical Engineering needed, 5+ years exp
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in commissioning electric generation equipment, including but not limited to BESS Equipment, Wind, Solar, Gas Turbine plants, Combined Heat and Power Generator sets, or related field, with a proven track record of successfully commissioning projects.

 

Job Summary

The Commissioning Lead is responsible for verifying installation completion of new projects, overseeing the commissioning process for new projects, ensuring that systems and equipment are installed and tested, according to specifications and standards.  The Commissioning Lead will also be responsible at times for visiting operational sites to aid in troubleshooting and retrofit efforts for more complex issues. This role will work closely with the PE, PM, DOC and EMS team to develop and safely implement commissioning plans and procedures.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervises and mentors junior commissioning engineers, technicians, or support staff assigned to commissioning projects.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and technical support to team members and contractors, assign tasks, set performance expectations, and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Fosters a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and continuous improvement, promotes professional development opportunities, and supports the growth and success of commissioning team members.
  • Aids in the development and implementation of commissioning plans and procedures for construction projects.
  • Coordinates and oversees the commissioning process, including site inspections, system testing, troubleshooting, and documentation, to ensure compliance with project requirements, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Reviews project drawings, specifications, and equipment submittals to identify commissioning requirements, verify installation details, and ensure compliance with design intent and industry standards.
  • Conducts and manages functional performance testing of  systems and components, such as HVAC, chillers, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and control systems, to verify proper operation and performance according to project specifications.
  • Develops commissioning reports, test logs, deficiency lists, and other documentation to track project progress, document issues, and communicate findings to project teams, contractors, and clients.
  • Collaborates with project managers, project engineers, legal and other stakeholders to identify and address commissioning requirements, review design changes, and ensure that commissioning activities align with project schedules and budgets.
  • Conducts training sessions and workshops for project teams, contractors, and both internal and customer operators on commissioning and maintenance processes, procedures, and best practices to enhance project knowledge and ensure successful project delivery and operation. 
  • Stays abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in commissioning, energy efficiency, and sustainable design to provide recommendations for continuous improvement and innovation.

 

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Comprehensive understanding of Electrical AC and DC systems, including Battery and Power Conversion (PCS) systems for Utility and industrial facilities.
  • Experience troubleshooting and commissioning control systems in the field while coordinating with control engineers.
  • Ability and experience managing vendor commissioning teams and outside contractors ensuring both customer site rules as well as internal Company practices are followed. 
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards, codes, and regulations related to construction and commissioning of electrical systems, including ASHRAE, NEBB, LEED, NFPA 70 and other relevant codes and Standards.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in commissioning tools, equipment, and software, including data loggers, meters, test instruments, and commissioning software (e.g., Building Management Systems, Energy Management Systems).
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to quality, attention to detail, and adherence to industry best practices and safety standards to deliver high-quality commissioning services and achieve client satisfaction.

 

Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, or equivalent experience. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in commissioning electric generation equipment, including but not limited to BESS Equipment, Wind, Solar, Gas Turbine plants, Combined Heat and Power Generator sets, or related field, with a proven track record of successfully commissioning projects.

Physical Demands Matrix

  • The Positions requires frequent walking around the BESS yard to supervise commissioning work and meet with clients and subcontractors.
  • The employee will spend occasional time conducting office work, such as preparing site reports and attending meetings.
  • Lifting or carrying up to 25 lbs is required occasionally, mainly consisting of spare parts and commissioning tools.
  • Occasional driving may be required when supporting other sites outside of El Paso, TX main homebase.

 

Work Environment Conditions

  • Work is frequently performed in a BESS yard, exposed to outdoor weather conditions and around energized electrical equipment requiring appropriate PPE. This position requires occasional hands-on installation or troubleshooting of systems, maintenance or repair work.

PPE Requirements (if applicable)

Daily work occurs at a BESS construction site. Employees must wear employer provided PPE, including FR2 clothes (or higher when needed), hard hat, safety glasses, safety footwear, high visibility vest and hearing protection as posted.    

 

Travel Requirements (if applicable)

Travel is expected frequently [up to 70%] when supporting other commissioning sites outside of El Paso, TX home base.
