The Weekend Editor oversees the organization’s news coverage during weekends, serving as the primary editorial decision-maker outside of standard weekday operations. Reporting to the Managing Editor, this role is responsible for managing reporters, setting priorities, and guiding coverage of breaking news, developing events, and planned stories. The Weekend Editor ensures all weekend content meets high standards for accuracy, fairness, speed, and editorial judgment while reflecting the organization’s mission and maintaining credibility across platforms.
Primary Responsibilities
Set editorial priorities for weekend coverage, identifying breaking news, developing stories, and planned assignments in line with newsroom strategy.
Exercise editorial judgment to determine story importance, placement, and resource allocation.
Oversee reporting, editing, and publication of weekend stories, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and balance.
Lead breaking news coverage during weekends, making real-time editorial decisions and coordinating limited resources.
Manage weekend reporters and editors by assigning stories, setting expectations, monitoring deadlines, and providing guidance.
Monitor the news cycle to ensure timely updates and appropriate follow-through as stories evolve.
Coordinate with senior editorial leadership and legal counsel, as needed, to assess legal, ethical, and reputational risk.
Collaborate with homepage editors, audience teams, and producers to support effective story placement and continuity across newsroom operations.
Experience & Requirements
Background in journalism, communications, political science, or a related field preferred
Strong editorial judgment in news journalism
Exceptional editing and fact-checking skills
Ability to lead newsroom coverage with limited resources
Deep understanding of news cycles, politics, and current events
Ability to make sound decisions under deadline pressure
