Overview
We are looking for a Staff Accountant with Government Contracting (GovCon) experience to own the core day-to-day accounting operations of the business. This role will consolidate the majority of accounting responsibilities. This is a hands-on, ownership-driven role ideal for someone who enjoys operating in a small GovCon environment, is comfortable owning AR/AP and the general ledger, and wants to grow into a Controller-level role over time. The Staff Accountant will report to MO’s Fractional CFO and partner closely with leadership to maintain strong financial controls, compliance, and reporting as the company scales.
This role is hybrid (3 days / week in-person), with a strong preference for candidates based in the Phoenix, AZ area to enable close collaboration with the CEO. Exceptional candidates located in approved states may be considered, with the expectation of regular in-person time in Arizona.
What You'll Do
Core Accounting Operations
Own Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable end-to-end, including invoicing, collections, vendor payments, and reconciliations
Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, ensuring accurate classification and documentation of all transactions
Execute month-end close activities, including journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and variance analysis
Ensure timely, accurate billing and revenue recognition aligned with contract terms and funding
Government Contracting Accounting & Compliance
Support accounting operations in compliance with GAAP, FAR, CAS, and DCAA expectations
Track and support indirect cost pools and allocations in partnership with the CFO
Assist with audit readiness, including preparation of schedules, documentation, and support for external CPA or government reviews
Support compliance activities related to contract accounting, cost allowability, and billing structures
Assist with incurred cost, provisional rate, or pricing-related support activities as needed
Financial Reporting & Analysis
Prepare recurring internal financial reports and dashboards for leadership
Perform variance analysis against budgets, forecasts, and prior periods
Support ad-hoc financial analysis to inform decision-making
Process Improvement & Controls
Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, controls, and documentation
Assist in developing and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and SOPs
Support accounting system enhancements, automation, and reporting improvements (e.g., Unanet, reporting tools)
Growth & Leadership Path
Build the skills, judgment, and systems required to take on increased responsibility over time
Prepare to evolve into a Senior Accountant / Assistant Controller / Controller role as MO grows
Serve as a trusted partner to the CFO and leadership team on financial discipline and scalability
What You'll Bring
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
3-7+ years of progressive accounting experience
Hands-on experience owning AR/AP and general ledger accounting
Working knowledge of GAAP and government cost accounting principles
Experience supporting audits or external financial reviews
Preferred Qualifications
Government contracting experience in a small or mid-sized business strongly preferred
Experience with GovCon accounting systems—Unanet preferred
Familiarity with FAR/CAS cost allowability and indirect rate structures
Exposure to multiple contract types (FFP, T&M, IDIQ, GSA MAS, TOs)CPA or CPA-track (nice to have, not required)

Compensation for this role is an annualized salary range of $75,000 to $95,000 plus benefits and growth potential.
Placement within this range will be based on the competency level of the candidate. An offer will be made at one of the following tiers:
Tier 1: $75,000: Meets minimum qualifications; requires some guidance post-onboarding; strong AR/AP ownership with basic GovCon exposure
Tier 2: $82,000 - $90,000: Fully-competent and independent; solid GovCon experience including billing and compliance
Tier 3: $95,000: Highly-experienced; deep GovCon knowledge across contract types, audits, and indirect cost structure
To ensure equity and consistency across our compensation system, MO applies a structured salary framework. Offers are made within the posted range based on demonstrated competency and experience. This range is non-negotiable to maintain internal and external pay equity.
Work Location & Expectations
This is a hybrid role with a strong preference for candidates based in Phoenix, AZ. Team members in this role are expected to work in person three (3) days per week at MO’s Phoenix office to support close collaboration with leadership and cross-functional partners.
Exceptional candidates located in approved states may be considered; however, regular in-person time in Arizona is still expected.
