The Associate Director, Compliance– EMEA is responsible for leading Compliance support across Ultragenyx’s EMEA Region, encompassing both directly operated and partner/distributor markets. The role will ensure that all regional operations comply with applicable laws, regulations, industry codes, and internal policies, while enabling responsible business growth. The individual will partner closely with local, regional and global leaders to promote a culture of integrity and ethical conduct consistent with Ultragenyx’s mission and values.
Work Model:
Flex: This role will typically require onsite work 2-3 days each week, or more depending on business needs. In many locations, the business will set certain days each week that Flex employees are required to be onsite.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a trusted Compliance advisor to EMEA Commercial, Medical, and cross-functional teams.
- Provide risk-based guidance on interactions with healthcare professionals, healthcare organizations, patient groups, and other stakeholders.
- Review and approve promotional and medical activities, scientific events, and field engagements.
- Partner with IT, and other relevant functions to ensure GDPR and local data protection compliance.
- Oversee compliance with third-party relationships, including distributors and service providers.
- Implement and maintain regional policies, procedures, and monitoring activities aligned with Ultragenyx standards.
- Conduct risk assessments and provide practical recommendations to address compliance gaps.
- Develop and deliver compliance training programs for employees, contractors, and partners.
- Enhance and develop processes, systems and technological tools to make compliance resources and communications more accessible and impactful
- Manage investigations and coordinate remediation efforts in collaboration with HR and other relevant functions.
- Promote ethical decision-making and continuous improvement across all EMEA functions.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (JD, PharmD, or Master’s in Finance/Audit/Accounting) preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of Compliance experience, including at least 5 years within the biotech or pharmaceutical industry.
- Strong knowledge of international compliance frameworks (e.g. EFPIA, ABPI, GDPR, anti-bribery/anti-corruption).
- Experience supporting both direct and partner/distributor markets within EMEA.
- Proven ability to balance compliance risk mitigation with business enablement.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills in a multicultural environment.
- Compliance or audit certification (CCEP, CPA, CIA, etc.) is a plus.
- Travel requirement: up to 20% within the EMEA region.
