Duties
Receive work assignments in the form of work orders or oral instructions accompanied by blueprints, sketches, drawings, models of parts, or other work specifications.,Interpret and apply sets and series of interrelated prints and drawings, to prepare supplementary sketches, and to calculate missing dimensions and tolerances.,Independently determine the work procedures, machine tools and attachments to be used, and the sequence of machining operations to accomplish each job.,Determine uncommon materials, dimensions, and tolerances.,Apply advanced shop mathematics, including geometric and trigonometric formulas, in laying out work and setting up machine tools.,Use any of the accepted trade methods and techniques and all conventional machine tools.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Machinist without more than normal supervision. Manufacture parts and complete items of equipment from raw stock of different kind of metals and metal alloys and other materials, and perform machining work required to manufacture castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications. Carry-out assignments which require special adaption and extension of the use of conventional machine tools and the use of specialized and non-conventional machine tools such as jig borers, jib grinders, hobbing, machines, hob grinders, gear generators, and numerically controlled machine tools. Plan and lay out work, set up and operate machine tools, and perform bench and assembly work.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent standing, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally lifts and carries larger assemblies or complete units exceeding 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body in installing, repairing, operating, or testing equipment in confined spaces such as manholes, machinery recesses, lock walls, or on overhead structures; climbs ladders, scaffolding, and works from suspended stages. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside during the day, and at night, as required by emergencies, over water that can be turbulent, and in the proximity of moving machinery. May work behind bulkheads, in tunnels, below water level or dewatered lock chambers or coffer boxes. Subject to falls, drowning, high voltage electrical shocks, injury and discomfort, exposure to moving equipment and machinery, loud noises, inclement weather and dangerous icy conditions, changing temperatures, exposure to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, fumes, paint vapors, sandblast particles, hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Incumbent utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment for those conditions which may be heavy and uncomfortable. Wear safety glasses, safety shoes, protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators, protective clothing, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
