Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled mechanic with journeyman or master-level experience to join our team. This role involves the maintenance and repair of a wide range of vehicles and equipment, including those powered by diesel, gasoline, or alternative fuels. Responsibilities also include servicing solid waste vehicles and emergency response apparatus.

Work may be performed independently or collaboratively with team members. Oversight, guidance, and performance evaluations are provided by a Lead Mechanic, Supervisor, or Manager.

Starting Salary - $25.01 - $34.01 (Depending on certification)

Technical

  • Basic and complex hydraulic diagnosis and repairs, including but not limited to cylinders, valves, valve bodies, lines, and hoses
  • Basic and complex heavy-duty fluid and air brake diagnosis and repair, including component removal and replacement
  • Basic and complex external and internal engine and transmission diagnosis, including component removal and replacement
  • Basic and complex heavy equipment suspension diagnosis and repair, including component removal and replacement
  • Basic and complex emission system diagnosis and repair, including component removal and replacement
  • Frequent use of diagnostic software
  • Fabrication skills, including MIG (Metal Inert Gas), arc, and gas welding
  • Participate in on-call rotation as necessary
  • Respond to road calls and work in the field, on occasion, as required
  • Ability to perform all duties as listed in the job description of Fleet Technician I

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Trade School or completion of an approved course in heavy and diesel mechanics, or five (5) years of experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Valid CDL Class 'B' driver's license or the ability to obtain within six months after employment is required
  • Valid Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive and heavy equipment mechanic trade
  • Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and standard safety precautions of the work
  • Possesses extensive knowledge of hydraulic systems, brake systems, suspension systems, external and internal engine components, transmission function, electrical systems (including multi-plex), new emission-controlled exhaust systems, and fabrication skills
  • Fleet includes but is not limited to:
    • Heavy equipment: Sweepers, Trailers, Off Road Tractors, Construction Equipment, Solid Waste Vehicles, Dump Trucks and Bucket Trucks, Large Trailers, Fire Department apparatus
    • Light equipment: Automobiles, ½ ton, ¾ ton, and 1-ton vehicles, small trailers

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work Environment: 20% inside a climate-controlled building and 80% outside, which may include driving.

Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require sitting for approximately one (1) hour per day, standing for approximately six (6) hours per day, and walking for approximately one (1) hour per day. The work requires frequent bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, working overhead, reaching, stretching, and repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, occasional lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds (such as truck tires and brake drums).

Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Enough to understand what others are saying in normal conversation in person, on the telephone, and detect abnormal noises in engines, drive lines, and other mechanical systems. Speaking: Enough to communicate orally with others in person, on the telephone, and while giving formal presentations to groups. Seeing: Enough to see and read computer monitor screens, operate a vehicle, and read fine print.

Driving Requirements: The work requires driving and possessing a valid Florida Class "B" Driver's License or CDL with endorsements, depending on the work assignment.

Technology: The work requires the ability to operate various electronic devices, including telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and laptop computers, and calculators, as well as all associated software.

Other Machines: The work requires the ability to operate various other machines, including but not limited to automotive, off-road, forklifts, and heavy equipment.

Tools: The work requires proficiency with various mechanic tools and shop equipment.
