Career Opportunity

The Foreperson, Rail Vehicles will act as a Team Leader for the department where they will plan, schedule, direct and control maintenance activities within the section.  


This Team Leader supervises and instructs unionized employees and at times, contractors. They are the go-to person for the department conducting training sessions, investigations, inspections and quality audits. 
 
The incumbent(s) may be required to work at various Rail Cars & Shops department facilities based on operational and business needs.
 
This position provides training and experience opportunities that would prepare the applicant for a Supervisor position within the Rail Cars & Shops Department.  These development opportunities may require the applicant to transfer to other Foreperson positions within the Department.

What You Will Do

  • Monitor and track information, data, records, and/or equipment inventory, following up, and updating as required
  • Inspect equipment items and rebuild or improve functionality through forming, bending, welding, or other methods of fabrication
  • Assist or prepare reports, estimates, employee related documents, schedules, inventory, etc., and distribute to appropriate parties in accordance with established standards
  • Ensure employees are appropriately trained on aspects of work, policies, and safety, and that track maintenance projects are aligned with standards
  • Liaise with other colleagues, support staff, other departments, and potentially external customers or stakeholders concerning routine matters related to the work assigned
  • Planning, adjusting, and projecting work, schedules, costs, and systems as needed
  • Verify the accuracy, quality, reliability, functionality, system requirements, and/or specifications are met in a given process, document, piece of equipment, system, or work method
  • Review data for discrepancies, errors, trends, or potential cost savings, report and provide suggested solutions as necessary. Evaluate the impact and implications of findings
  • Approving all work performed in subway yards and ensuring the safe coordination of work groups in the yard as set forth within the weekly track access plan
  • Initiating discipline of employees for non-compliance to TTC safety rules, corporate policy or legislative requirements
  • Visiting yard worksites and field supervisors / forepersons on a regular basis to provide advice, guidance and feedback reviewing/inspecting working conditions to ensure that established work zone safety standards are met
  • Receiving, monitoring and reviewing weekly yard level construction and maintenance requirements including weekly information related to power cuts, work vehicle and track space availability
  • Ensuring that safety related requirements defined in each work plan are reflected in the weekly work schedule
  • Assisting frontline Forepersons and Operating Supervisors from all sections and departments in meeting their weekly work requirements by developing a safe and efficient plan for track level work
  • Confirming the availability of work cars, work car operators, work force, tools, materials, equipment etc. necessary for successful yard work completion
  • Finalizing weekly work schedules that incorporate the movement of fleet vehicles, work force and materials etc. in an efficient manner without negatively impacting revenue service
  • Authorizing track level access as set out in the weekly access schedule in coordination with Yard Control staff

  • Must have an understanding of how the various skills associated with the maintenance of urban transit vehicles are utilized in a major repair and component overhaul facility
  • Must be able to supervise the activities of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled unionized employees
  • Must possess a good understanding of the applicable regulations governing the maintenance and repair of rail vehicles and applicable environmental regulations, (WHMIS, etc.)
  • Sound judgement plus well-developed problem solving, organizational, supervisory, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills including technical report writing
