Description

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Perioperative Registered Nurse is responsible for providing safe, effective, and compassionate perioperative care across multiple surgical areas. The Perioperative Registered Nurse performs patient assessments, provides education and pre-admission screenings, maintains surgical suite readiness, and collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure optimal patient outcomes in compliance with all regulatory standards. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.

 

Job Functions:

  1. Follows and completes assignments as given by the charge nurse.
  2. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.
  3. Gathers supplies and equipment for surgical cases.
  4. Prepares surgery suite for surgical procedures and ensures that the Surgery Department and Operating Rooms are maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner.
  5. Restocks supplies in surgery suite when procedures have ended for the day and monitors surgery inventory, notifying appropriate individual(s) when supplies are needed.
  6. Operates equipment and performs technical skills according to policies and standards; learns new skills and seeks assistance appropriately.
  7. Synthesizes patient data and implements action plan appropriate to situation (good judgment, critical thinking).
  8. Ensures documentation is complete, clear, concise, accurate, and completed within a timely manner per hospital policy, including computerized documentation.
  9. Collaborates with appropriate disciplines in developing coordinated outcomes and interventions; interacts with team members regarding patient progress.
  10. Conducts individualized age-specific patient/family assessments upon admission according to defined standards; collects and documents data related to patient’s physical, mental, developmental, emotional and social condition; demonstrates age-specific competency in assessment of patients by the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs, knowledge of growth and development, and understanding of treatment needed.
  11. Assesses patient/family need for education and uses an individualized approach in delivery style; formulates goals and outcomes based on assessment data.
  12. Accountable that patient care meets standards of safety, effectiveness, patient rights and guest relations; provides education for patients and collaborates with other disciplines.
  13. Conducts Perioperative Phone Screening of pre-operative surgical patients and makes pre-operative calls to provide arrival time, instructions, and preadmission teaching; contacts all patients prior to surgery to assess medical and medication history and reviews for appropriate lab, x-ray, and EKG orders to determine where and when these procedures are to be completed.
  14. Responsible for organizing and directing activities in accordance with nursing standards, TJC, Medicare and all other applicable federal, state and local guidelines.
  15. Tracks issues that are trending from calls and ensures action plans with follow-up are completed and reported.
  16. Assumes accountability and responsibility for attendance and timely completion of competencies, mandatory programs, unit-specific requirements (i.e., ACLS), and unit meetings.
  17. Follows established universal precautions in the use of gloves, gowns, and/or masks.
  18. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications


Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Current licensure in the State of Ohio as a Registered Nurse required.
  • BLS required upon hire.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 1 year of employment required.
  • Maintains compliance in RQI required.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, Training:

  • Verbal, clerical, numerical, and manual dexterity, color vision and near visual acuity, proper lifting techniques and body mechanics.
  • Staff members must maintain competency in the areas of Surgery, Pre/Post/PACU, Pre-Admission Testing.

 

Compensation Details:  Education, experience, and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
