Scientist, Complex In Vitro Specialist, CVRI
Bayer has an opening for a Research Associate to join our Cardiovascular Renal Complex In Vitro Research group based at the Bayer Innovation Campus in the heart of Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA.
The position will require a motivated individual who will support ongoing projects in precision medicine which involves state of the art cellular assays that will ultimately contribute towards the discovery of novel therapeutics in the cardiovascular area. The successful candidate will perform a range of complex in vitro disease modeling, integrate different cellular-molecular biology technologies and utilize primarily hiPS cell technologies. The candidate should have the ability to work independently and effectively as well as collaboratively with teams on various studies.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of the Scientist – Complex In Vitro specialist, CVRI are to:
- Hands-on lab-based role working closely with our scientists to design, validate and execute complex cell-based assays (3D organoid systems, bioengineered tissues, organ-on-a-chip) to support target identification, validation and compound profiling for early and late-stage projects;
- Responsible for troubleshooting experiments, assays, or procedures: overcome obstacles and develop alternative experimental approaches;
- Maintain human induced pluripotent stem cell cultures (hiPSC) and regularly differentiate cells towards cardiomyocytes or kidney cells as required;
- Execute advanced functional characterization of cardiomyocytes and related cell systems (eg. imaging, contractility analysis, MEA, 3D contractility in Engineered Heart Tissues, analysis of 3D organoid systems, FACS analysis);
- Independently perform data analysis, effectively interpret results and prepare reports and presentations, ensuring timely delivery of results to project teams;
- Work in close collaboration with colleagues across sites in Germany and the US and together with external collaborators and CROs;
- Recommend new and innovative solutions to problems and take initiative in keeping up to date with current technological and biological innovation and development in this field;
- Active support for all cluster relevant housekeeping, innovation and communication topics and full compliance with respect to HSE guidelines, documentation and good research practices.
WHO YOU ARE
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required qualifications:
- Bachelors of Science;
- Hands-on experience with cell culture and the execution of cell based functional assays;
- Experience with the culture and manipulation of engineered and primary cells of heart or kidney origin;
- Experience with induced pluripotent stem cell culture and differentiation toward cardiomyocytes or kidney cells;
- Experience with the set-up and execution of various functional cell-based assay formats (e.g. Impedance based technologies, MEA, Engineered Heart Tissues);
- Broad spectrum in vitro skill set (including molecular biology utilizing siRNA or CRISPR/Cas9, biochemistry and cellular analytical techniques including flow cytometry and imaging);
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems requiring original thought;
- Interest in digitalization (including implementation of LIMS systems) and technological innovation;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Ability to prepare reports and clearly interpret the results of complex experiments.
Preferred qualifications:
- BS with 2 years of research experience or MS Degree in Biology, biochemistry, bioengineering or related field.
Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $78,727.20 – $118,090.80. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include healthcare, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.
This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, skills, prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
