The Director of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for establishing, implementing, and sustaining the organization’s environmental, health, and safety programs. This role partners with all levels of the workforce to develop short- and long-term strategies aimed at fostering a culture of safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement. The Director leads initiatives designed to mitigate risk, enhance associate engagement, and ensure the organization meets or exceeds all applicable federal, state, and local requirements. This position is accountable for monitoring key performance indicators, incident rates, and overall EHS effectiveness across all facilities.
Essential Job Functions:
- Design, implement, and administer a comprehensive EHS program, including safety recommendations, inspections, audits, training, incident investigations, risk mitigation, and adherence to general manufacturing practices and all applicable regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, state and local regulations).
- Develop and maintain training programs, including curriculum, learning activities, instructional materials, and lesson plans; identify and manage third-party providers where appropriate.
- Evaluate and monitor training effectiveness, ensuring learning objectives are met; conduct follow-up assessments and continuously update content based on regulatory changes, audit findings, or operational needs.
- Drive behavioral safety initiatives, influencing employee conduct, safety awareness, and regulatory compliance through a structured behavior-based safety program.
- Ensure operational integrity relating to environmental compliance, quality, reliability, health, safety, and security, exercise strong influence across functions without direct authority.
- Coordinate and manage EHS programs and projects across multiple manufacturing locations, including schedules, deliverables, budgets, and resource requirements.
- Proactively identify hazards, deficiencies, and process improvement opportunities, recommending corrective actions and leading initiatives to improve workplace safety and regulatory performance.
- Monitor performance metrics and prepare reporting for the executive team, summarizing progress on safety targets, audit results, incident trends, and compliance status.
- Develop and manage project plans, including timelines, sequencing, resource allocation, and training requirements to support EHS objectives.
- Prepare financial business cases to support investment in EHS improvements, technology, and safety equipment, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Lead risk management activities, collaborating with department leaders to identify potential operational risks and implement mitigation strategies prior to business impacts.
- Demonstrate strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills, influencing cross-functional teams, vendors, and internal stakeholders at all levels.
- Develop contingency plans to ensure organizational readiness and achievement of key performance indicators.
- Analyze EHS program performance using metrics, audits, and data-driven indicators; lead process reviews, identify best practices, and conduct post-implementation audits to validate compliance and effectiveness.
- Conduct facility and equipment audits to mitigate risk and enhance overall environmental and safety performance.
- Review new and existing equipment for compliance with safety standards prior to purchase or installation.
- Evaluate Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for new products to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards prior to approval.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
- 8+ years proven experience in EHS management, with a track record of leading safety programs in a complex manufacturing operation.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, DEP, and other relevant regulatory requirements.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyze data, prepare reports, and present findings to executive leadership.
- Certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to influence organizational culture and drive change.
